Somewhat recently it has been fairly popular in the internet community to take a side in the pineapple debate. That is, whether or not it is right to put pineapple on pizza. Many memes, articles, and blog posts have been made taking one side or the other. Bryce Baudoin of MSU's Odyssey Online community has even written an excellent article "ending the debate." And while I agree with his conclusion that the toppings others put on their pizza shouldn't be your concern, I believe that there is a deeper level to this debate.
Before this debate surfaced on the internet, pineapple on pizza wasn't a big deal. Many enjoyed Hawaiian pizza, and if someone disagreed with the decision to put pineapple on pizza, there wasn't such a strong response like there is now. Furthermore, why did this debate happen with this specific topping? After all, what is the significance of this happening to pineapple, and not say, anchovies or say bananas (it's a real thing- look it up)?
The reactions of each side on the internet is also interesting in their different styles. Because of the focus on pineapples, and the fact that the fundamentalism that now goes along with both the anti and pro-pineapple community exist, we should infer that both believe that there is some objective truth to the question that is pineapples on pizza. Or maybe most just don't care, but really like memes. I don't know, this is still the internet. Is this just an extension of the us vs them mentality? Is this all just meaningless entertainment?
I don't know the answers to these questions, but they are valid, especially in the potentially volatile subject of pinenapple on pizza.
