The other day, I went to an event with a hundred of my closest girlfriends to celebrate the rare and beautiful love of one my sisters and her boyfriend. We crowded her, as she recounted the top ten of the reasons why she loved her significant other. This made me think about love, but because I lack a significant other, instead of sharing ten reasons why I love a special somebody, I will tell you ten (there's really way more than ten) reasons why I love myself.
1. I shamelessly take selfies in every angle, location, and time. “Know thy selfie" -Ezra Koenig
2. When I was five, I thought dogs urinated through their tails.
3. I create incredible playlists on Spotify. You can't hate me when I play my current favorite song for five consecutive days because we all know my music rocks!
4. I am a good friend. I will keep your secrets. I will greet you with a smile and a hug. I will tell you when you have kale stuck in your teeth.
5. Also, when I was five, I went exploring under one of my neighbor's backyard decks. My friends and I found three baby robin eggs. One cracked on me, and I cried walking all the way home, soaked in my favorite shirt. 2001 was not my year.
6. I am funny. Some people don't think so, but they are wrong.
7. I like my own pictures on Instagram, and not only when the last digit of my number of likes ends in a nine. I like ALL my pictures. I mean..if you don't love yourself, then who will?
8. I appreciate weird people. In fact, weird people are my favorite kind of humans. I know what you're thinking; what is my definition of weird anyway? On a scale of Andy Milonakis to the pink-haired girl from the throwback television series LazyTown, I would say weird is the happy median.
9. I don't snore in my sleep. Okay, fine. Sometimes I do.
10. My favorite character on Friends is Phoebe Buffet. She's the best.
11. I still make Spongebob references in my day-to-day life.
“What're they selling?!"
“Chocolates!"
12. I watch Ellen when I start to feel sorry for myself. She inspires me.
13. As pre-teen, I read and wrote way too many stories about disease and suicide.
14. My friends are cooler than me.
15. I told you there were more than ten.
Though all of the statements I wrote above are clearly for the purpose of poops and giggles, I still believe it is important to love yourself. To contribute to Teen Self-Esteem Awareness month, please take a moment out of your day to reflect on the many reasons why you appreciate your own little quirks and weird memories. They're precious because they make you who you are. Love yourself!
