In a world inundated by EDM, upbeat pop and synth-heavy songs, it’s nice to go back to the basics. Nothing quite beats just sitting back and listening to some relaxing music. And nothing says “chill” like the music of Mac DeMarco. With a vibe similar to that of Real Estate, DeMarco's music has been self-declared as "slacker rock." While he may like showing off his ability to hold a cigarette between the gap of his teeth, his lyrics, falsetto voice and smooth guitar riffs show his true talents. In fact, he plays most of the instruments that you hear on the records, further demonstrating his musical talent. With such a fun and easy-going personality, the list of reasons to love this man is endless.
His name.
Mac DeMarco was born in British Columbia under the name Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV, a name that would give the DOL a run for their money. So, to simplify things, he later changed his name to McBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco.
All jokes aside, it's hard to imagine what was going through his head when he came up with that. Is this some elaborate prank? Is he fascinated with weird names? Is he messing with us? At any rate, the complexity of his name is pretty humorous. Speaking of which...
His sense of humor.
Mac’s sense of humor is basically your average dude’s potty-mouthed toilet humor. Just listen to his “freestyle rapping,” a poetic, on-the-spot series of swear words. While such “crude” humor may turn off some people, it’s quite nice to have a musician who’s carefree enough to not care about the words coming out of his mouth. Many celebrities let fame get to their heads and act all high and mighty in interviews. However, Mac’s easy-going personality allows him to throw a few jokes around and not give a crap.

His infatuation with Michael McDonald.
Great musicians are often influenced by other great musicians. Mac DeMarco is a huge fan of the many talented bands of the ‘70s, including Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. One key similarity of those two bands is that vocalist Michael McDonald has been a band member for each. Something about McDonald’s deep, silky and distinct voice has captivated DeMarco. In almost every interview, he somehow is able to bring Michael McDonald into the conversation, from pointing him out on album covers to wanting to collaborate with him. It’s just nice to know that my favorite musicians are as equally obsessed with bands as I am.
His fan club.
No, this isn't one of those expensive clubs where you have to pay to get a photo in your inbox once a week. DeMarco recently started his own fan club with exclusive things like... funny videos. There's not a lot yet since it's so new, but you can't resist funny videos of Mac DeMarco, right? Plus, it's co-managed by his mother. Any mother who genuinely supports her son in the music biz is a rare treasure. I guess his awesomeness is genetic. Sign up here.
