Being in a sorority. Being a member of college Greek life.

These are two phrases that I would have never thought would describe me. When I was in high school I fell into the belief that Greek life was just a way for college to take more money from you and I couldn’t see any benefits of it.

However, when I got to college all of this changed. From my first day, I saw members of Greek life all over campus and I began to see why people love Greek life so much. I talked to a few girls in different sororities at my college and they were so pleased with their experience and I began to warm up to the idea of joining.

I didn’t go through formal recruitment though because I was out of town on the weekend. But, I was able to be a founding member of a new chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma and let me tell you this was one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

Greek life is not always as it is portrayed in movies and these reasons that I joined fuel my passion for my organization each day!

1. To have tons of fun

Being in a sorority is fun it’s as plain and simple as that. Whether it be sisterhood events, date functions, or mixers we can all agree that it is dang fun which is much needed as a stressed college student.

2. To always have a place to go

I joined Greek life to always be home. No matter what has happened during the day I know that there is always a big house full of support that I can go to and feel better. You never have to feel lost because there is always a place for you to go when you are in Greek life.

3. To have a huge support system

Having friends is great and while have a few close friends is what I usually rely on having a large support system of over 100 women really is amazing. I never have to worry about not having someone to help me when I need it or just having someone who can hang out and grab some coffee.

4. To meet some of my best friends

I have met some of my best friends through being in greek life. The experiences that we share can never compare to anything else. I will always have a special bond with the close friends that I have met. I am thankful for Greek life for bringing these amazing friends into my life.

5. To be involved on campus

It allows me to be involved on my campus way more than I would have been had I not joined a sorority. I have met so many people on my campus and have done so much more than I would have otherwise. It is much easier to get involved when you have a group of women getting involved with you.

6. To grow my leadership skills

Being a part of Greek life has allowed me to develop my personal leadership skills greatly. Being able to be a leader in my sorority has shown me that I do have potential to lead in my future.

7. To make memories

The memories that you make in college are truly one of a kind. I joined Greek life to make the best memories possible. Making memories with over 100 sisters is the best way to do it.

8. To help the community

One big aspect of Greek life that is often overlooked is our philanthropic work. We give to our national philanthropies while also giving back to our communities. This is one of the most amazing and beautiful parts that brings all Greek life together.

9. To be a part of something big

Being a member of Greek life is bigger than you may ever realize. It is even bigger than the University that I attend. Being a member of my nationwide sorority allows me to connect with people from all over and is a great way to make new experiences.

10. To be a better person

I joined Greek life honestly to be a better version of myself. Being a member of such a great organization with such great people has allowed me to grow and learn so much about myself and others and I will be forever grateful to have joined Greek life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
