On The Fence About #GoingGreek? Here Are 5 Reasons Why You Should

It's not for everyone, but it changed my life.

I can honestly say that my college experience would be completely different without Greek Life. I would have different friends, I would have gotten involved in different things, and I would have gone to different events. Being a part of Greek Life shaped every single part of my college experience. I realize that it's not for everyone, but I went Greek and it was life-changing. As a result, I want to encourage anyone with the financial ability to at least try it. To anyone deciding whether or not to #GoGreek, here are five reasons why you should at least consider it.

1. The history

Greek Life has literally been around for almost as long as America has (the first fraternal organization was established on December 5, 1776). How often do you get the chance to become a part of something with so much history nationally and on your campus? Through initiation and various events specific to each organization, you will get to literally do the same things that people in your organization have done for hundreds of years.

2. The connections

Being a part of a Greek organization isn't just for college, it's for a lifetime. As a result, there are thousands of alumni around the nation who are in the same organization as you. Meeting someone who shares your letters a feeling of connectedness and pride like no other. You can then use this connectedness to make a new friend, build your network, or maybe even get a job.

3. The philanthropies

A huge part of Greek Life is the philanthropic aspect. Every organization has a philanthropy or philanthropies that they support through fundraising events and service hours. Being a part of a Greek organization makes it easy to find an awesome cause to serve and passionate people to serve it with.

4. The social aspect

Another huge part of Greek Life is the social aspect. However, it might be different than you think. Although there are frat parties, there is so much more as well. Being Greek gives you fun sisterhood/brotherhood events, philanthropy events, and date parties to add to your calendar. In addition, it gives you great friends to have a blast with at these events.

5. The sisterhood/brotherhood

There are very few things in this world that rival the sisterhood and brotherhood that you will see in Greek organizations. Going through the same initiation processes, meetings, parties, philanthropies, and more creates a bond like no other. This gives you the best of friends and a support system that you can always lean on. You truly feel like a special part of something bigger than yourself.

Like I said before, Greek Life is not for everyone. However, I say if you have the money and resources to try it, then you should! Who knows? It could end up changing your life like it did mine.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
