When you have a big heart, you tend to go through life differently when it comes to both thoughts and actions. Of course, this is a good thing, but it also has its downsides. You're emotionally affected by the bad things going on in the world and your own needs/wants aren't always met when you're focused on others.

Somehow, this doesn't seem to get you down. Even though there's more chance of being hurt, you wouldn't change a thing if it means making others happy. Here are the seven facts of life when you have a big heart.

1. You love animals big and small

animal love

Of course common pets like cats and dogs come to mind, but you don't know why people say some lives matter less than others. The death of a pet fish can hit like a ton of bricks, you constantly fear for a flock of low-flying birds being hit by your car when cruising down the interstate, and you try to bring the bugs in your house outside when you can.

2. When you care about people, you do so with your whole heart

mom friend

Chances are that you're either going to care with your entire heart or not at all. This makes you a likely candidate to be the Parent Friend of the group.

3. Emotional commercials and videos can catch you off guard

cry

Sad puppies and kittens? Soldiers coming home? A heartwarming commercial for soup? Instant tears.

4. You're a great listener

listen

Your friends come to you for help since they know you're going to listen. This can be confusing because you dole out advice left and right even if you feel like you don't even have your own life together.

5. Empathy guides your moral compass

empathy

When you think with your heart, it affects your views and beliefs. This is one of the reasons people get so into politics and activism. With empathy, you can understand the struggles that others go through even if you, yourself, have no similar experiences.

6. You often put other people's needs before your own

help others

Your feet could be dying after work, but you'll still hold the door open for someone or offer your seat to someone who needs it more.

7. You tend to overbuy when it comes to gift-giving

throw money

When you have family and friends who mean the world to you, how are you supposed to settle with a few gifts when they deserve the world?

8. You can never truly hate someone

it gets better

No matter how much you were hurt, you will always want the best for them even if you never want to speak to them again.

9. You react to your friends' exciting news as if it was your own

excited

Legends support legends nowadays!

10. Your kindness is extended to complete strangers

hug

Need someone to talk to but you two are strangers? Who cares! They can say "Hey, I'm going through a hard time" and you'll say "What's going on? How can I help?"

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
