Vicky Brown, also know as Mom B, has been holding down the fort at Sig Ep for the past four years. She used to teach and be a House Mom at the same time, but after being placed on disability this past year for a sickness she has been battling, the boys no longer have to share time with her. She is all theirs!
When Mom B got sick with encephalitis - a type of West Nile virus that settles in your brain - she was sick with a fever of 105 degrees for five days straight and then continued the fight two years afterward. You wouldn't know this by looking at Mom B because this virus attacks the insides of your body, but she has been so strong in fighting to get better.
The doctors told her if it were to happen a few years later in her life, she would have not survived. So, it was a huge blessing in disguise that even though she had this horrible sickness, there was a light at the end of the tunnel for her.
Mom B has this sweet thing called "Mom B Tuesdays." Every week the men of Sig Ep get together to do something different. HOW AWESOME. For example:
- Fudge in a bag (who doesn't want a bag of fudge?!)
- Formal tie tying (simple and fancy and every style in-between)
- Sexual Assault classes with different sororities (this week it was Kappa Delta and Zeta)
She also loves to cook. But, Mom B isn't any ordinary cook. She takes everyday recipes and converts them into her own version of the recipe, making it healthier while still tasting delicious. She knows what she is doing, people. When Mom B isn't cooking, you can find her getting creative with sewing and embroidering. She can do just about anything. If you don't believe me, ask a Sig Ep to see his key chain. She made each of her members their own keychain with their letters and name on them, in their house's colors too!
They have become so popular that girl houses have started calling her to make them. If you want one, stop by Sig Ep and hit up Mom B and she can make you one however you want it for just $10! These days no one would be caught dead without something monogrammed or without their Greek letters on their person, anyways (just saying you might want to keep her in mind).
When I asked Mom B about her favorite part about being a House Mom, she said she loves when the guys just stop by her room and hangout with her on her big couch and talk. This past Sunday night, she was a little worn out from cleaning her own house all day that she feel asleep with the light on and door open. One of the sweet Sig Eps stopped in to check on her and just turned off her light and closed her door so she wouldn't be woken up and could rest. My heart melted for her; my two brothers would never leave me alone if that was me.
Mom B has a house full of great guys who keep her smiling and active. She always finds time for her Sig Eps. She loves going to all of the shows and playing pool in the living room with whoever is brave enough to challenge her. Guys. Seriously. Give your House Momma a hug and pat her on the back for being so strong in her recovery and continuing to put up with you rowdy men, as if you are each her own. She loves you all more than you know!
I fully believe that Vicky Brown was a teacher for a reason, put in the role of a House Mom for a reason and a survivor of West Nile virus for a reason. Mom B is inspiring, caring, brave and encouraging by the way she lives her life and gives her time.
