9 Honest Reasons You're Excited For The Fall Semester, In The Middle Of Summer
Ashley Lytle

In high school, I used to live for school breaks but now that I'm one year into college, I cannot wait for it to be August. What happened to those summer dreams we all carried throughout high school? Here are nine reasons why I can't wait to get back into that school grind and so should you:

1. More work, less play

Summer used to feel like a lot more play and a lot less work but I feel as if the roles have switched now that I'm in college. I think this feeling is because during the school year I would both work at a job and have my school work to do which created a balance. Now all I have is my job. My classes were often about topics I was passionate or curious about which made them less work for me. Just like the saying, "If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life." For these reasons, summer no longer feels as balanced as my school year did. Maybe it just depends about where you're working but personally, I preferred the balance the school year offers me.

2. In summer, life feels static

You've graduated high school and next is the final step to prepare you for a life-long of working. You can't wait to discover and pursue the passion you want to explore for your entire life. In summer, instead of earning the credits and being offered the countless number of opportunities college campuses offer during the school year I'm at a standstill. I feel as if nothing is moving forward because, in reality, it's not. Summer break used to be a much-needed rest but now I realize how your progress towards the future is at a stop in terms of your education. Something that didn't matter to me in high school. I regret not looking for an internship as I have a feeling it would have made the static feeling I have smaller if not have eliminated it.

3. Less friends

All my friends live in different towns or states and I can't wait to see them all again. Over my first year, I met a lot of amazing people and I can't wait for another year of making memories.

4. More events happening

If you're not attending any of the events offered to you by your college then you're missing out. Colleges truly offer you the opportunity to explore. They host events allowing you to develop skills, search for your passion, try new things, and get into the school spirit. I've already checked out the fall events calendar for my school and have marked a few that I hope to attend.

5. School year = free food

The number of events involving free food is never ending and perfect for us penny-pinching college students. Most these events are free also. I can't wait to go grab my free dinner, experience the event, and save some money while I'm at it. You might even make some new friends while attending.

6. Sporting Events

While sports may not be your thing, it is a great way to get in that school spirit and meet new people. For some, the best part of a sporting event is the game but for me, the best part is the atmosphere that's created by those in attendance.

7. Bars

In my college town, bars are open to those 18 and over. While we still can't buy drinks, we are allowed in. It's a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night. At the beginning of the school year, they are often packed with students and it ends up being a really fun way to elevate any stress you may be feeling. So, "shut up and dance" already!

8. Halloween

I just love Halloween and all it encompasses: Haunted mazes, horror movies, costumes, and cheap candy! Last Halloween I spent the night binge watching "Stranger Things" with the guy I now call my boyfriend.

9. New semester means new friends

Ashley Lytle

Every semester you have the opportunity to meet new friends. It's just about you making the effort and taking the chances. Classes, new students, events, and more offer the perfect opportunity to make new contacts so get on out there and see who you meet!

It's a pain to learn but it's definitely worth it in the end.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.

I am without a doubt one of those people who refuses to start decorating for Christmas or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving has become an underrated holiday over the years. You barely see any Thanksgiving decorations in stores; it's like they skip right from Halloween to Christmas.

Some universities only get two or three days off for Thanksgiving break. Or, if your university is like mine, you get the whole week off go go home. A whole week off is a long time. I'm not complaining, because I'd rather have a whole week off than three days, but there is a lot of down time. Here are some ideas as to what you can do to get the most out of your Thanksgiving break.

For college students everywhere, Thanksgiving is a time to relax and not really worry about homework (well, depending on what major you're in).
