It finally happened. The first trailer for "Captain America: Civil War" was released and it was (of course) glorious. My family didn't see me for a good hour because I was watching it on repeat. But let's indulge my inner nerd and break down this trailer in all its beauty. Warning: there will be spoilers.
1. It opens with Steve asking Bucky if he remembers him -- and he does!
(And his mom's name and that Steve used to wear newspaper in hisshoes. The devil is in the details.) The tears are already flowing and we're only 20 seconds in. Oh god. Get it together, Julia.
2. “Captain, while a great many people see you as a hero, there are some who prefer the word 'vigilante.' You’ve operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That’s something the world can no longer tolerate."
When you are worthy enough to be able to move Mjölnir, operating with "unlimited power and no supervision" is not something one really has to worry about with Cap. Also -- it's Steve Rogers. Actual puppy. Mr. Thaddeus Ross, I can already tell we aren't going to get along. Ominous authority figure aside, I don't like your mustache and your turtleneck. Sir.
3. "I know how much Bucky means to you."
The entire movie -- no the entire Captain America franchise summed up in one line. Everyone knows how much they love each other. Also, can I just say how much I adore these shots that are right out of a romantic movie? The longing gazes out a window, the focus on the touches between them. I'm so excited for this new Romantic Drama, you have no idea.
4. "Are you saying you'll arrest me?"
I guess we all know what side Black Widow is on. Did the events in Winter Soldier mean nothing to you, Nat?
5. "Hey Captain..."
And now Iron Man's here! Yay! God knows I love Tony with every shattered smithereen of my heart, but the whole "If we can't accept limitations, we are no better than the bad guys" is real rich coming from you, Tony. The whole second Avengers movie happened because of you.
6. "People that shoot at you usually wind up shooting at me."
Sam and Steve, sitting in a tree, b-e-s-t friends for life! Kicking ass, taking names, looking after Bucky. Plus, matching aviator sunglasses.
7. "We fight."
Cue a series of action and fighting shots. There is one important thing to pay attention to, and that is who is standing on whose side (aka picking teams). I am surprised to see Hawkeye on Captain's side (cause he and Natasha are usually together -- but hey, it is civil war), not surprised to see War Machine on Iron Man's side. Scarlet Witch is standing with Cap, and Black Panther is fighting Bucky so clearly on Tony's team. There are some characters missing that we know will be appearing, such as Spiderman and Ant-Man. Whose side will they join?
8. Cap: “I’m sorry, Tony. You know I wouldn’t do this if I had other choice. But he’s my friend.”
Tony: "So was I."
Leading up to this exchange, there is a lot of fighting and dramatic music and can I just say it just pumps you up?! And then this just shatters your heart. A) because something bad happens to War Machine and Tony just looks heartbroken, and B) Tony's sad puppy eyes when he says "So was I." This movie is going to hurt, guys.
9. "Divided we fall."
10. I still have a lot of questions.
like how Bucky is adjusting to the 21st century, who is dressing Bucky, does Bucky have a warm bed at night, is Bucky eating enough...
11. Now we wait.
Goodbye, world. It was nice knowing you. Now we all have to wait seven months until May 6.
