Reaching That Dream Goal

Four years ago I decided I wanted to work for SNL. Now I have an interview.

Reaching That Dream Goal

On May 10, 2012, I opened up a brand new journal and began writing. I look back on it now:

On April 18, 2012, I decided what I wanted to do with my life. Working for 'SNL' is my dream.
These were the first two sentences I wrote in this journal. I was 15 years old, still in the middle of recovering from an invasive back surgery. I was struggling to get through high school and had serious doubts on whether or not I could cope with the concept of college, let alone finish high school itself. That moment on April 18, 2012, when I was on a train in Boston, I looked at my mother and simply said, "Wouldn't it be cool if I worked for 'SNL?'" That night at home, we spent hours looking at different schools and programs that would help me towards this goal. Whether it be film, general media, mass communications -- anything at all, to help me with this dream. It shocked me that she complied so easily with the idea of me pursuing a career in media, considering prior to that, I was thinking about medical school. But she supported me fully and shipped me off to art school.

After I realized my desire to work in media, and more specifically "Saturday Night Live," I delved into the culture of the show, fanbase and all. This resulted in me making some key connections that, while at the time I didn't realize their total significance, did help me feel that much closer to my end goal. Earlier this summer, I applied to "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," and I messaged my friend who works for NBC, letting her know. She asked for my resume and gave it to her coworkers.

On Thursday, August 11, I received an email from "Saturday Night Live," expressing their interest in having me come in for an interview. I heard from them again today, August 17, about the scheduling of said interview, which will take place on August 24.

A little over four years after I realized what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and I have an interview. It may be for an internship, sure -- but in my mind, it is checking my life goal off the list.

While there is still a chance I won't get the internship, as there is that chance with any interview one has, the experience of an interview at "Saturday Night Live" makes my goals and dreams that much more tangible. I'm starting to realize that I can do it, despite any setbacks or limitations that I may have had, or currently have. I'm starting to realize that all of the people that told me my degree would lead me to nowhere were straight-out wrong. I'm starting to realize that I should have had more confidence in my life goals, as whenever somebody asked me what I wanted to do, I shamefully admitted that I want to work in "the industry."

Whether I get the internship or not, the process of getting this interview has officially changed my life forever, for the better. I will now proudly stand tall about my major and my dreams. I will now insist to people that I can do what I want to do, because all it takes is a little confidence and determination.

I suggest everybody out there keeping their "unlikely" dreams hidden take the same route, because this is proof that anything can happen. It doesn't just take luck. It takes perseverance.

Thank you to everybody who kept me going, and told me that I could reach my goals. Thank you to everybody who thought otherwise, but stayed quiet and told me they'd support me. But especially thank you to the people that told me I would go nowhere, and would do nothing, and would achieve nothing. You made me shy about sharing my dreams with people, but also, ignited the flame inside of me to shine brighter, which led me to this interview.

And remember: August 24, 2016. Wish me luck.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
