Every kid dreams of having a pet whether it's a cat, a dog, or even a goldfish. But all kids see is the fun, easy part of owning an animal. As kids we were all about playing around and making a fun name. Now as i’m older, I understand all the things that are involved when you have to care for an animal. I learned that it’s a lot of work. I’m sorry that I made my parents do all the work. Owning a pet has its good times and its bad times, but i'm so glad I get to experience the joy of having a furry friend.
Pros
Cuddle Buddy; When they are in the mood, cuddling with a pet makes the whole day better.
Companion; It makes it much easier to be home alone when you know you have a dog to protect you, or a cat to keep you company.
Funny pet videos; There is always a new funny animal video. My current favorite is Cat’s getting brain freeze. Having your own pet gives you the opportunity to create your own funny videos.
Fun; pets are always fun. Playing fetch with the dog, or messing with the cat, its always an adventure.
Walk buddy; not many people would help give you motivation to get out and go for a walk. A pet that has to be walked gives you a great reason to be more active.
Teach responsibility; Taking care of a pet can help you teach kids responsibility. They have something to take care of, feeding, walking, and cleaning up after pets is a great way to teach kids how to be responsible.
Cons
Cost; first you have to buy the animal and then pay for any vet bills. After that its money towards pet food, or cat litter.
Messy; There is always a new mess with pets. The cat making a mess in the litter box, or having to clean out the dog's pen, there is always something new to do.
Feeding; They need to be fed and given fresh water several times a day.
Hair; Hair gets everywhere. I go to college and end up finding pet hair all over my clothes, even if it's been a month since I’ve been home.
Sometimes they can be brats; Whether it's the dog getting into things she isn’t supposed to, or the cat deciding that we like to be clawed, they have their bratty moments. That’s when the spray bottle comes in handy.
Even though having an animal can have its drawbacks, i’m so happy my parents let me have a dog while I grew up. Thanks Mom and Dad for taking care of our pets. I can’t wait to have my own pets someday.
