Due to housing selection being a mess this year, my roommate and I ended up in a triple. When I woke up the morning of housing selection to text messages telling me we were living in a triple, I wasn’t happy. But, I stayed positive, and it really did end up working out for the best. Now I have two wonderful roommates, so here’s a list of some of the pros and cons of a triple.
Pro: There’s always someone there.
Anytime you need a friend, or anytime you think you don’t but really do, there’s someone there to comfort you. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve walked into the room on a bad day and one of my two lovely roommates was there for me to vent or for a much-needed hug.
Con: There’s always someone there.
Alone time when you live in a triple is not something that happens often. It works when everyone sticks to their routine, but when one of us is cramming for an exam or writing the paper that’s due the next day, sometimes routines don’t really matter.
Pro: We don’t have to pay as much to live there.
It’s not a big difference, but it still counts. When your tuition is as high as ours is at Ithaca College, anything is nice.
Pro: Less Space.
Having a little less space is actually kind of helpful. I have too much stuff, and for some reason, I felt the need to bring everything I own to college, most of which I did not need. Having less space this year means having less stuff.
Con: Less Space.
There’s about zero space to move in our room, but we make it work.
Pro: No one needs to bring everything they own.
We don’t have as much space, but the nice thing is we don’t all need to bring everything. One person brings a TV, one person brings the printer, and another the fridge. No one needs to lug everything they own up those torturous stairs.
Pro: Closet Size.
A small closet may seem like a rough time for most girls, but for someone with an actual shopping problem, it saves a lot of money. Because I have no room in my closet, that means I really can’t buy any more clothes.
Con: Closet Size.
If you walk into our room, you’ll see our overly stuffed closets. Things spill out of every one of the three closets. And if you look at them, every inch of all three is covered in clothes and it’ll stay that way until we move out.
It’s pretty rough living in a triple, but the trick is to look at each of the cons as a pro. As long as you stay positive everything will work out. And if I’m honest, I love living with two people. It’s hard living in a cramped space, but it’s something we have to do in college.
