So coming into this spring semester 2018 there are numerous things that teachers and students bump heads about. I know teachers like to tell us that they are there to help us and us as students really do appreciate it but there are a lot of things that professors may not know that we know as college students. Let's be honest most of the younger professors fresh out of grad school might relate but at the same time that 5 to 10-year gap really does put a lot of things out of perspective for most. I'm just here as a voice for the common student and will give ten "guidelines" that professors need to know before stepping foot in the classroom.

1. It's 2018, which means every kid in this classroom has a cell phone.

Okay, so this used to be the biggest thing when I was in high school about being on your phones. I understand it can be rude be we are living in a day and age where your phone needs to be on you 24/7 for god knows what. If that means you as a teacher have a problem with a kid being on their cell phone during class and you don't need to stop what your teaching and yell at the kid.

You as a teacher can get with the times and most likely incorporate the phone into class assignments or make the students look things up on the phone. Obviously, if your teaching a kid is on their phone for longer than 15 seconds A, his GF/BF are going at it over text or B, they just don't care and why are you spending your energy trying to get him or her off the phone. Incorporating technology into the classroom can be the best thing you can do and if they have a laptop out especially a MAC you literally can't stop them from using their iPhone so no use trying.

2. If you don't know what Rate My Professor is, get to know it.

I don't care how old you are as a teacher if you don't know what rate my professor is at this point you really need to log on and see what your score is. I hear teachers all the time like " I don't know what that is", or " I don't care what it is " I truly dislike you and you're just being ignorant. I have learned since coming to a four-year school that when you pick your teachers you can't go around asking everyone how certain professors are and remember all of the answers that people gave you.

I use to rate my professor because every professor I take is on there and they rate them from best to worst with actual examples from many students and the best part is they are very truthful. If you as a professor don't go on the website and learn what kids are actually saying about you, I think you should pick a new interest.

Also, it's not a bashing site for professors most of the comments people make are outstanding it's just that one professor who doesn't get it or teaches their class in the most unorthodox way. So go to the site and learn and make yourself a better professor it will work wonders in the long run.

3. If you know how many absences we can have and how many sick days we can have best believe we as a student know, too.

Okay professors, if you put in the syllabus that we can miss 5 days before are grade gets lowered by a letter. We are going to use all five days best belief. I understand your class might be the most interesting thing in the world and you might preach into our heads that we need to be there every day to attain all the knowledge but if we don't have to be at the most stressful place in the world ( school in general) and we don't have to be there and nothing will happen to our grade? Best believe we are taking that vacation day. Someone we know will be in the class and it's not a thing to get the notes from them.

4. As a college professor, you should know that Monday and Friday are the least productive.

Okay, we know our parents and sometimes us students are paying so much money for school and we should be very engaging but let's be honest 80% of were partying all Thursday night and going hard all weekend so those days of class we are struggling just to get by.

I know it sucks when you ask the class to answer a question and no one responds or it seems like your talking to a wall all lecture but please bear with us we actually care and are just trying to hold down whatever is in our stomachs. Or at least I am trying to.

5. You may love your voice but trust me a lot of people might not.

One thing I think I hate the most as a student are professors that talk for the whole period. I try to stay away from lecture classes because I hate classes that aren't engaging. You can't expect me to listen to your voice for 50 -1:15 min and then retain all of that and be able to answer all of it on a test. That's just ridiculous be engaging id much rather learn about new things when my opinion or voice is being valued.

6. Quizzes, tests, and exams

I know this is just apart of school and I actually don't have a problem with this. I just have a problem with a professor that think that only have two test for 500 points and then get mad when kids hate them when you only give two big point quizzes or test for the semester and then half of your class is failing.

Or teachers that give like quizzes every other day that is over the whole section but are 5 questions. That means two are wrong and you get a D and that's not right. I don't care what it is you can't prepare for a five-question quiz that's like 50 points and you have to remember five points from the whole chapter.

7. GET TO KNOW YOUR STUDENTS.

I know its pretty hard to do but if you're at a small school are your class sizes are pretty small, make it apparent to get to know who you are teaching. I know every kid is different and they all have different stories to tell and you never know who might be going through so very hard time. If you give some effort I guarantee that the kid will give effort too.

8. You're not the only professor the student has.

I'm not saying that kids don't have to allow certain times to study for certain classes but you can't tell me on the first day that I need to have three hours in my day to study for the notes you threw at us that day. It's just not happening not only do I have your class I have four more and sports and a job. I have other things to do most of the time and there's just not enough time in the day and id rather not be up until 4 studying. Its just going to make students resent the teacher even more and I don't think anyone wants that.

9. Don't be that professor that hates what they teach.

I'm keeping this one short and sweet. If you don't want to be there and make that fact know, what makes you think that we want to be there too.

10. Give real-life examples as many times as you can.

One thing I think students love is good stories about real life experiences. I think the best thing you can do is relate what your teaching to the real world because as college students we are about to experience it full force and the best thing to do is help us get ready for the real world.

I hope my points have made a point. I'm not doing this just because I hate the way professors teach I actually come from a family of a couple professors and all I can say is that it's hard trying to relate to a younger generation but with help from the younger generation we can help each other to achieve great goals.
