As college students, we have all heard it. Don't leave this until the last minute, you will need all the time you can get. And while this may be with good intentions 9 times out of 10, we still leave it to that 10-page paper for the night before. Many adults see this as a bad thing, but in reality, there are many advantages to this.
The first, we are energized by this sensation that we get when we are starting the assignment. We literally get a ball of energy when we notice that our time is running low. Yes, it may be because of the panic and it may not feel that great, but it is important to get something done.
It also puts us under pressure, something that will help us once college is done. The world is full of high-pressure situations such as job interviews. If we are put under this sort of pressure and it has positive impacts, such as getting it in on time in a shorter amount of time than if we had a longer period than we would surely be more likely to feel more positively towards the same amount of pressure in a different setting.
We also learn the importance of deadlines and fast deadlines. While we may have something that we can work on for a whole semester, we probably won't. This can result in negative or positive. On the negative side, we could not leave ourselves enough time and not get it done. But on the positive side, when we start later than the professor would probably like us to, we learn how to do it quickly.
We do not dwell on what could be wrong with it, sometimes resulting in a better grade because we go with our gut instinct, which is usually the right one. Many jobs will give quick deadlines with late notice and the best way to practice them is setting them up and working on it.
Procrastination can also help us get things done. While procrastination many of us find other things to do that need to be done but we have been also procrastinating. For example, when I have an assignment due date coming up, I usually clean my dorm a bit. I clean off my desk, sweep the floors, do laundry, anything productive besides what I should be doing first. While this is making a to-do list smaller, it's also helping ourselves in the future.
So next time that you are dreading doing an assignment and putting it off or typing so fast you think you broke the world record, remember that it is okay. While you may be cursing your present/past self at that moment, procrastination isn't that bad and might actually help you in the long run.
