10 Privileges You Take For Granted That Your Childhood Self Would Envy

If we only knew the rules of the game sooner.

Growing up, you could pretty much get in trouble for anything—not washing your hands before dinner, failing to fold your laundry, and eating too much candy.

Now, looking back on your childhood, you realize that everything you used to get in trouble for was simply because you weren’t yet an adult. I guess a 5-year-old saying “shut-up” is a lot different than a 13-year-old saying it.

So here are 10 things you got in trouble for as a kid that you realize don’t matter nearly as much as an adult.

1. Saying bad words

You still remember being put on time out for telling your brother to shut up. Now you’re in middle school listening to your teacher rant about his “stupid broken computer.” You gasp and wonder where his time out is. Sorry kid, but the truth is no one really considers stupid a bad word when you’re older.

2. Refusing to eat vegetables

Broccoli was not your friend back in the day. In fact, wrapping it up in a paper napkin and attempting to hide it in the trash got your video games taken away. But now, your parents are lucky if you eat vegetables once a week. Even better, you can play video games whenever you want.

3. Wearing inappropriate clothing

You still cringe at the memory of wearing week-old gym sweats instead of your super cute skirt because the principal said it wasn’t appropriate for an academic setting. So you wear that same skirt as an undergrad and get hundreds of compliments.

4. Spending too much money

Remember the time you came home with a couple shirts from the mall and your parents put the rest of your birthday money in the bank. Then they gave you a speech about the importance of being responsible with money. Now, you have a job and your own bank account. Sure, you may still get a few reminders to be smart with your money, but they have little to no say in what you choose to do with your funds.

5. Not cleaning your room

Back in the day, your entire night’s plans could be put on hold if your room wasn’t up to par.

“Hey mom, I’m heading out now.”

“Not with all that unfolded laundry you aren’t.”

But now, they have no control over how tidy or messy your room stays. If you want to keep your dorm or apartment a complete mess, that’s totally up to you. Although I wouldn’t recommend it.

6. Coming home late

If your parents said to be home at 9 p.m., and you were home at 9:20 p.m. you were in trouble—BIG TROUBLE. Not only did you disregard what you were told, but you also disrespected them. Now, you can show up at 3 a.m. and they think nothing of it, as long as you weren’t doing anything illegal or dangerous.

7. Skipping class

You wouldn’t dare try to skip class because you knew that would lead straight to your demise. In fact, the school would call home to let your guardians know what period(s) you were absent. Fast forward a few years to the college classroom and the same can’t be said. If you’re missing in that lecture hall, no one’s going to notify your parents, except maybe your grades.

8. Hitting someone

Playing Punch Buggy was no excuse to hit anyone. Even when you tried to explain the game, your parents were not pleased. As far as they’re concerned, you were taught to keep your hands to yourself. But now that you’re older, getting into a bar crawl doesn’t faze them. You’ll literally run into the kitchen yelling that someone’s trying to hit you, and they pay you no mind. I guess now that you’re older, keep your hands to yourself is a suggestion rather than a rule.

9. Helping Out in the Kitchen

When you were younger, helping out in the kitchen was forbidden. Between the hot stove and the knives, the kitchen was no place for a child. Luckily, you were allowed to use the toaster and microwave. Now, your parents are asking you to make dinner and you’re begging for the days you were only allowed to make Bagel Bites in the toaster.

10. Talking back

Just kidding. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re never too old to get in trouble for talking back. You didn’t try it then, and you probably shouldn’t try it now.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
