Dungeon Fighter Online or DFO for short, was one of the many MMORPGs I played as a young kid taking his first steps into multiplayer gaming on the internet.
I legitimately didn't know Xbox Live existed until my sophomore year of high school. But I always had my MMOs to go back to. I was into Maple Story, Grand Fantasia, Mabinogi, Flyff but the one constant that remained as I steadily dropped out of the other games was DFO. Unfortunately, the servers were killed so was my investment in the game but I recently rediscovered it and my love for the game.
DFO is a RPG stylized, like a retro arcade beat em up, like Double Dragon or Final Fight and, immediately, I was hooked. It felt like a strange combination of mechanics but it works so well and playing it feels good.
There are eight base classes with three paths the player can take and change the way they play the class offering for multiple play-styles. There are two other classes, the Creator and Dark Knight, but they are only available once a created character reaches level 70. I opted for the Fighter class and took the path of the Nen Emperor which allows me to use magic abilities with martial arts abilities and it feels fantastic.
My favorite skill is the Haitai Summon which conjures a giant lion that I can ride and deal massive damage to enemies.
One thing that hasn't changed about DFO is that playing it does get extremely repetitive.
You'll be running through the same dungeon multiple times to complete quests sometimes, and fighting the same enemies. But, I personally have enough fun with the combat to get past it.
While in dungeons, the player can move in eight directions to jump, attack and use special skills that cost MP and can be cancelled into from basic attacks and create combos for more damage.
The fighter class is built for this and can lead into crazy damage. I once fought a boss and killed it before it could lay a single finger on me. It feels massively satisfying.
DFO has everything a MMO needs such as party forming, dungeon and boss raids, guild forming, PVP and everything else you can expect.
I'm more of a solo player but would rather play with friends so I can't speak much about those features.
Dungeon Fighter Online is a fun game, yet very repetitive and can get grating to play at points that require a lot of farming for items. It's worth a look at least.
