I am in a little city called Lynchburg in the state of Virginia. As a college student, I am at that point of the semester where you are worrying about your GPA, studying for upcoming exams, and just wishing for a little free time to take a nap. Social activities seem to cease as everybody is at the same phase. Meanwhile, the media is full of unimportant things that distract us from seeing the things that really matter. Jealousy and envy seem more important than love and compassion these days, and we have the luxury of saying that we don’t like a person just because he/she is different.
Suddenly, news from the other side of the world hit us: Paris was attacked by terrorists. Everyone turned on their TVs and shockingly watched the news. Eighty people were reported killed after gunmen burst into the Bataclan concert hall and took hostages before security forces stormed the hall. People were shot dead at restaurants and bars at five other sites in Paris. At least 130 people were killed. These are the deadliest attacks in Europe since the 2004 Madrid bombings.
Our world seemed to stop for a moment and think about all those lives that were lost on such a terrible event. While Paris turned their lights off, the rest of the world turned them on, and thousands of profile pictures on Facebook turned to the French flag.
The visit of death makes us sensitive to the voices of those who we did not hear before, compassionate for people in need, and it makes us think about our future and about our lives. There are people that woke up the next day without a son, without a father, without a brother, and nobody told them that everything was going to change after that Friday night. You don’t think about it until it happens to you.
God has a purpose with everything that happens in the world on this day. We just have to let him fulfill that purpose and wait for his answer to our whys. God is watching Paris and taking care of his children that are being affected.
Events like this one unite people. Let’s not allow time to steal that from us.
