Everyday it seems like negative outweighs positive, bad outweighs good, and judgment is preferred over understanding. Here are a few tips you can use to brighten the world if even but a little bit.

As mentioned earlier, passing judgment upon others is much easier and done more often than attempts to understand. It is an understandable function in the wild where survival is necessary to continue a species, but in today’s world, human society has developed a way in which we no longer need to worry about larger and more dangerous prey. Judgment is really no longer needed to the degree animals need it. A tip would be rather than immediately point out flaws in a statement, debate, or appearance, take a moment to think about where the person is coming from. It does require your own ideologies to be compromised, but who knows, you may just see where they are coming from. Reason can always win.

Another tip is to smile. Smiling only takes but a few seconds and the psychological effects are only beneficial. Dopamine rushes to the brain of both the giving and receiving the smile. In addition, positivity has been found to improve productivity and a smile can certainly brighten a person’s day. Not to mention you even get a little workout when you flex the 43 muscles in your face that it takes to smile.

Finally, giving is one of the best things in the world. Whether it be a piece of candy or a kind word, the smallest gift can change a person. I know I love to give gifts to people because I enjoy their reaction as well as the feeling I get when I see genuine happiness. Even just lending a pencil to someone can change their whole day.

So whether it be flexing those face muscles or giving someone a hand, spreading those good vibes can only make this world a better place - Be that light of joy within the darkness of negativity.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
