Herringbone floors, barn doors in bedrooms, even re-purposing shipping containers: these are the new trends in the world of building and decorating. That’s right, I said shipping containers. Let's start there. These large metal boxes are actually being used to build resorts, restaurants, and homes. People are seeking these once-irrelevant structures to build their family homes. Not only are they part of the green movement, but they’re safe and they look great, too. The limits seem endless with this discovery, as do the designs you’ll find inside of them and I’ve gotta say, I’m obsessed.

New trends are always popping up, but one of the most popular is the color grey. From kitchens to bedrooms, bathroom and guest rooms, grey accents, grey decor and grey walls are taking over. There are a multitude of shades and designs all allowing for a little more forgiveness if you spill, splash, or happen to have children. Grey is welcoming and warm and truly opens up a persons options as far as decorating. Almost anything can complement grey, allowing for small pops of color and flares of fun in any room of the house.

Another of my favorites are wood beams and ceiling accents. Stained dark wood can complement a bright airy room and give a room without a focal point purpose. Exposed brick compliments these wood beams and makes even the largest spaces feel warm and cozy. If ceiling art isn’t for you, then consider the possibility of a wood accent wall or wooden decoration. The best part is that the wood used in these eye catching pieces can often be reclaimed, another green move.

Attention to detail really shows the love and time a person puts into their home, it makes it their own. Small touches from picture frames to door knobs make all the difference when decorating. One of the most popular home details are barn doors, a personal favorite. They add a rustic flare and allow for less space to be taken up in tight spaces because they slide rather than open outward like a traditional door. These doors can often be made from reclaimed wood or can be custom carved.

These are only a few of the unique stamps that people are currently obsessed with and the obsession seems like it’s going to continue to boom. The beauty of the green movement being a part of these new fads is rewarding, particularly when big guys like restaurant owners and resorts are using them. People notice a reclaimed piece or compliment a shipping container design and like a line of dominoes, the trends spread from one to the next. While we are updating our homes and finding new lunch spots, we’re also saving the plant. It doesn’t get much better then that.
