I've never been a big fan of pop music. Don't get me wrong, there are some popular artists and songs that I adore, but I always find myself flipping through radio stations, disliking nearly every tune that comes up.
It took me a long time to place what I disliked about pop. At first, I thought it was the stereotypically pop-esque beats or bass drops that I didn't like. Or maybe it was the type of voice that most of these singers possessed. Or the lack of depth in most of the lyrics you hear on the radio these days.
The answer is a combination of all these elements. But I recently went on a journey of self-discovery and I realized that I can like pop-esque music with all the elements of those songs on the radio.
I realized that I love listening to this kind of music in the car with all the windows down on a sunny day, momentarily curing me of any burdens on my chest that day.
But why could I love these artists so much and dislike what's on the radio? My theory is that each of these pop (or indie pop) artists adds something extra to the genre. Here's a list of some artists to listen to if you want a pop sound with something extra.
1. Oh Wonder
Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West are the duo that makes up Oh Wonder. They're a fairly new team, but individually, they've both been in the music business for a while. They generally sing in unison and their voices blend together perfectly.
Though their sound would definitely be classified as pop or electro-pop, they have strong jazz influences. Also, their lyrics have a lot of hidden depth that you might not realize until you listen a few times. Though their first album, "Oh Wonder," is really good, I'd recommend you listen to their second (and newest) album, "Ultralife," which is even better.
Suggested songs: "Ultralife," "Lifetimes," "Drive," "Heavy," "Without You"
2. KAYE
KAYE is truly the embodiment of girl power. Her album "Animal Love" (which she released under her real name, Charlene Kaye) came out in 2012 and I was obsessed with it for years. She took a super long break from her solo endeavors, but in 2016, she finally made a comeback. She rebranded herself as "KAYE" and started to make more pop-style music.
At first, I was a little bit upset that she didn't stay with what she was doing before, but I also loved what she did with her new EP. Though it sounds like pop, there are also clear rock and retro influences and very deep, fascinating lyrics. Everything's so layered in her songs that I catch new and interesting things every time I listen to them.
Suggested songs: "Honey," "Porcelain," "UUU," "Cheshire Kitten," "Animal Love I," "Woman Up"
(NOTE: The last two are from when she was still releasing music under her real name, but I included them anyway since they sound more pop-y than the other songs on her "Animal Love" album.)
3. Superfruit
Superfruit is a duo that consists of Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi, two members of the popular a cappella group Pentatonix. What makes their music interesting is that they have that happy, pop sound while sticking to their roots in choir. If you listen closely, you can hear so many layers and harmonies in this music. It's fun to dissect, but also great stress relief music.
Suggested songs: "Worth It (Perfect)," "Sexy Ladies," "Vacation," "Goodbye from Lonely," "Future Friends," "Hurry Up!"
4. BØRNS
BØRNS has an unbelievable voice! It took me forever to realize he was a guy because he's got such a smooth, high-pitched voice. His look reminds me so much of the 80s and his music can have an 80s feel sometimes, but it feels very current too. It's hard to explain, but you'll get it once you give it a listen.
He's already pretty popular and I'm sure he's on his way up in the music scene because his songs are so much fun to jam to!
Suggested songs: "Electric Love," "Past Lives," "Seeing Stars," "Faded Heart"
5. Computer Games
I'd been waiting for Darren Criss (of "Glee" and "A Very Potter Musical" fame) to make music again ever since first hearing his solo EP, which came out in 2010. Finally, seven years later, Darren teamed up with his brother Chuck Criss (who was formerly in a band called the "Freelance Whales") to create a new band.
They recently released their first EP, and though there are only three songs, each one of those songs is so catchy and feel-good. Also, it has the Darren Criss, singer-songwriter style even though the music is more pop-like than his past music.
Suggested songs: "Every Single Night," "Lost Boys Life," "We Like It"
6. Aly & AJ
The Disney Channel queens of my childhood are back and I am here for it! It kind of upsets me that the Jonas Brothers only had to reactivate their Instagram account for the fangirls to come rushing back, but Aly & AJ literally released a comeback EP and I never heard a word about it from anyone!
They also changed up their sound to sound more retro/pop and it works really well for them! Please check them out and give them the attention they deserve!
Suggested songs: "Take Me," "I Know," "Promises," "The Distance"
