As a writer, there are certain ideas that just live in your head for a while, waiting for you to flesh them out. The idea that love can be misused as an excuse in an argument has been something I've scribbled down multiple times in the past year alone.
I've been trying to work my way through this one for months now, to shape it into something beyond the simple meaning. But sometimes, you have to take a piece to its roots before you can let it grow. Plain and simple, here is the idea that hasn't left me in over a year.
I Love You
I love you
Was coined to be a statement,
A promise,
A proclamation.
It isn't the sort of thing you whisper
Or ask.
It is strong and bold.
It can stand on its own
And gladly will.
But as time has gone by,
It has become a replacement for weaker,
Pathetic phrases, the ones
You never want to hear.
Please don't leave me.
Forgive me.
I didn't mean it.
I need you.
Please.
We say I love you
To soften the blow,
To persuade the most important people to stay.
It stands tall
So we don't have to.
