The Plus Side of Heartbreak

"It's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all."

When it's 3 a.m. and you are wide awake in bed, sick to your stomach because a boy doesn't want you, that statement is hard to believe. As someone very familiar with this feeling, I'm here to tell you that when they say it's not the end of the world -- the good news is they're right.

1. You are no more or less because you are with or without one person. A song my mom used to sing to me when I was little says, "On the day that you were born the angels got together, and decided to create a dream come true."

You alone are a dream come true. You alone are enough to just be. You alone are greater than the sum of your imperfections, because you alone are much more than you can ever realize.

2. Being "alone" doesn't really mean you're alone. You find out who your friends are when you are going through a difficult time. This is no secret. But the beauty in this is that it's so much sweeter and so much more special to be able to cherish a friend because they helped you out of your dark time. Whether it's someone who is new to your life or old, find comfort in those who reach out to you -- not even necessarily because of the words they say or the gestures they make, but because of the care and thought behind those things.

3. One day someone will prove to you why this person was not your person. You are so much more than enough on your own, and you do not by any means need another person to complete you. That being said, one person, one day will come along and prove that very fact to you, by being the one who takes your already full cup and makes it overflow. They will know your worth, maybe even more than you do. They will remind you of that. You will never doubt yourself. And you will know exactly why it didn't work with someone else.

4. It's always darkest before the dawn. So cliche, and such an overused metaphor, but so true. Like most things in life, heartbreak has to get worse before it gets better. But here's a secret: it always gets better. It just does. And when you wake up one morning and realize you haven't thought of "them" in a week, that week will turn into two, and then three, and then a month. And it will slowly but surely become clear to you that every bad thing ends, too.

5. Everything happens for a reason. Again, cliche. But whenever you're doubting yourself, when you're questioning why you weren't enough, when you wish you could change the past and rewrite your story so it worked out the way you expected it to, think of the last time something didn't go as planned. Every seemingly wrong situation you encounter, every time you are running late for work, when you get stuck in traffic driving home, when you forget your book for class and have to run back to get it -- know that these things add up to a bigger picture that puts you in the exact spot that you are now. Though those examples are minimal compared to the real, genuine, physical pain of a broken heart, they all carry the same truth.

Everything in your life happens because it should. You happen for a reason. They happened for a reason. Each day of your life is part of an equation that will divide, add, subtract and multiply, but will always equal exactly what it is meant to.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
