This year Sony’s PlayStation turns 20 and for it’s grand anniversary I decided to take a step back and think about my favorite PlayStation titles throughout the years. From Lara to Kratos, these games really sank me into pretty intense adventures that I just can’t forget.
Resident Evil 2 (PS1)
What's better than cracking a couple skulls and fighting off some T-virus infected zombies?
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
There's not even a slight moment where this game was not going to be placed on this list. I played this a couple times, at a very young age, yet my appreciation for this game didn't grow stronger until I grew up a bit more, but there's no doubt I didn't enjoy every second of this game. Traveling around Gaia as Cloud and Tifa acting like a complete derp, and having an never-ending grudge on Sephiroth were my fondest memories.
Crash Team Racing (PS1)
I vividly remember going to my cousins' house every weekend and endlessly playing this until our thumbs were sore. Passing around the controller and playing the story mode, staying up all night to get past cities, valleys and ruins.
Spyro the Dragon (PS1)
There's almost nothing better than being an animated purple dragon defeating enemies, recovering stolen treasures and saving your fellow dragons. To this day I still like to go back and put in a couple hours into this game, and boy does nostalgia hit me hard.
Diablo (PS1)
This RPG hack and slash dungeon-based beauty of a game that sure did give me a run for my money. The great pools of blood and masses of hell fire and skeletons definitely kept me wide eyed throughout the game.
Tomb Raider (PS1)
The Tomb Raider series, really hits home, I have played these games throughout my life and have enjoyed each one in it's own way. The first one definitely stuck with me the most, it was so revolutionary at it's time for being so unique. Playing as Lara Croft and exploring temples, solving puzzles and acquire treasures and talismans was always a thrilling time.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)
Causing major wreckage and havoc in Los Santos was the highlight of my pre-teen memories with friends. Trying to figure out every way to destroy the world until the inevitable "Wasted" screen appeared and we had to pass the controller.
God of War I & II (PS2)
When Athena gives you the memo that your buddy Ares, who just so happens to be the God of War, fooled you into killing your own family, there's no way in hell that you can't try to kill him.
Life is Strange (PS3 & PS4)
This game is an emotional roller coaster and edge sitting game that keeps you wanting more and more every minute. Max Caulfield, a photography student, returns to her hometown of Arcadia Bay to attend Blackwell Academy after several years of being in Washington only to find out that life can get really funky, really fast. Nothing is what it was, especially now that she has the power to turn back time as well as having an impulsive, strong-willed best friend at her side.
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
Just the scenery and animation in this game alone are breath taking and the idea of being a wanderer who travels across lands to defeat titanic Colossi, in which each experience with a colossus is interesting and special in its own way. This game will forever be one of my favorites to play, it always seems to grab a hold of me every time I play it.
Spiderman 2 (PS2)
This game was one of my childhood favorites for a really long time. I loved how you could follow the story within the game as well as do random side quests to defeat villains or to help out a citizen in need. The story overall wasn't too fantastic because it related to the movie at the time, but the game play definitely made it solid enough for it to be an enjoyable game to lose yourself in.
Kingdom Hearts I & II (PS2)
If you've ever played Kingdom Hearts, you definitely know why this is listed. A never ending adventure with Sora, Disney and Final Fantasy characters all in one epic story? Yes please.
Guitar Hero III (PS2)
The PlayStation 2 was the epitome of my Guitar Hero days. Endlessly playing "Bulls on Parade," "Before I Forget" and "Sunshine of Your Love" on expert until my fingertips would start to catch fire is basically how my fondest GH memories were made.
Star Wars Battlefront (PS2)
Playing the Rise of the Empire story, space battles, galactic conquests and just being in the Star Wars universe makes this game fantastic. I cannot tell you how many hours I spent on this game only to feel the need to watch Star Wars over again.
Demon's Souls (PS3)
The first game in the "Souls" series based in the dark land of Boletaria where demons and other creatures live, where you try to defeat them so they will no longer feast on the souls of the living. If you haven't played any of the Souls games let me tell you something, these games can be hard. Blood, sweat and maybe a couple tears is what it takes to make it in these games, but man once victory is achieved you feel absolutely god-like.
Devil May Cry HD Collection (PS3)
I am a huge DMC fan, so when the collection came out I definitely was all over that. It is a collection of DMC 1-3 ported into high definition versions all in one glorious disc. Dante has been one of my favorite characters to play in a video game, along with defeating demons using traditional hack and slash combos, it will forever be my cup of tea.
Mortal Kombat Kollection (PS3)
Mortal Kombat will forever have a place in my heart, as a person that adores fighting games, MK is no exception. When the MK Kollection was released for the PlayStation 2 I was more than stoked, Armageddon and Shaolin Monks were probably the two that I played the most, especially because you were able to travel from world to world and be trained my the Mortal Kombat characters themselves to become the ultimate kombat fighter.
Warframe (PS4)
Warframe was the first game I played on the PS4 surprisingly and it grabbed a hold on me for a while. The fact that you get to travel around different planets is a concept I really enjoy in games like Warframe as well as Destiny. Plus being able to control a race of ancient warriors can be pretty rad.
Little Big Planet 1-3 (PS3)
Platforming, cute sack creatures and multiplayer capabilities is what makes Little Big Planet such a great game to play with other people. All the features within the game as well as the cute and creative levels are what make the game so fun and it really show that they made a huge effort to make it a fun experience for everyone playing.
Infamous I & II (PS3)
Good or evil? It's your ultimate choice to be the life-saving hero or the ruthless villain that you've always wanted to be. The main character, Cole MacGrath gets caught up in an explosion and wakes up with sick electrical powers, and with these powers you have the choice to do what you want with them. I had the same inner conflict with this game that I had with Shadow the Hedgehog because of the fact that I could do either good or bad which gives you free game to do whatever you want to the environment, citizen and the yourself as a newly formed superhuman.
Outlast (PS4)
Spooky psychiatric asylum with the found footage style that seems to be ever so popular now mixed with some crazy patients that have overrun the hospital creates a less than cheery environment to play in. This game is little to not combat, and is aimed more towards the survivalist based form of gameplay, so it feels more like you're in a messed up horror filled scene rather than a video game. For many of the indie horror games that I've fallen into my reaction and jump scare ratio has never really been that high, but Outlast certainly changed that.
P.T. (PS4)
Another game that has changed my perceptions on indie horror games is P.T. P.T. is a first person psychologically thrilling survival horror game created my Hideo Kojima, and published by Konami for the PlayStation 4. The player gets to explore a never ending corridor of an extremely paranormal active house while experiencing supernatural events that can be pretty graphic and disturbing. It was an interactive teaser for upcoming Silent Hills game that follows the Silent Hill, but it has recently been cancelled and removed from the Play Station store. RIP P.T. you will forever be missed.
The Last of Us (PS3 & PS4)
The Last of Us is a third person post apocalyptic game where you play as a man Joel with a young girl named Ellie and it is your task to transport her as well as defend yourself and her from thousands of angry zombie-like humans that have been infected with a special Cordyceps fungus. This game not only challenges you to think about your choices, but it's also an emotional roller coaster that you never expected. Once you play this game, it'll definitely be on your list as well.
Bloodborne (PS4)
The newest installment of the Souls series exclusively for the PS4, Bloodborne is just the level of anxiety ridden difficulty that we all craved it would be. In this action RPG (role-playing game) you play as Hunter and travel through Yharnam in which most of the people residing in it have a blood-borne disease and throughout the game it is Hunter's task to eliminate the plague itself. Souls games are very fun to play, but they are always brutally difficult to the point where you have to commit to continue playing it, but it is such a rewarding game to play with each boss battle and achievement.
