There are plenty of songs about love and romance. I have an entire playlist on my phone devoted to them (it is titled "baelist/baeless" in case you were wondering) and it is full of sappy love songs about how a guy loves a girl or visa versa and their beautiful romantic story. They are great, and make for some great times (especially if you have a significant other.) However, not every good song is a love song and I am here to prove it.
So, this week, I decided to make a new playlist. A while ago (after a breakup) I made a playlist called "girls rule/boys drool." I decided to revisit it this week and make a few changes. The new title of said playlist is "girls rule." This playlist is devoted to girl power, and nothing else. It is not a heartbreak playlist or an "I hate the male gender" playlist. It is just a list of songs that you can jam out to with all your single girlfriends when you are having an off day, or sing in the shower after a breakup or listen to on the way to class to remind your self that you are a boss and can take anything life throws at you.
Yes, there is a lot of Beyoncé.
"I Don't Wanna be in Love" - Good Charlotte
This song is an oldie but a goodie. I remember listening to this song in middle school but only now do I appreciate its genius. With a beat that just makes you wanna jump up and down at a Good Charlotte concert and lyrics that are serious but still fit with an upbeat song, it is perfect for any girl who needs to know that being in a relationship is not everything.
"Run the World (Girls)" - Beyoncé
Now, for the first of three songs by Queen B on this playlist. Of course, you probably knew this was coming. "Run the World" is a staple for any girl power playlist. This song is literally straight up telling girls that they really do run "this mother." What is "this mother" you ask?
Anything you want it to be.
"Somethin' Bad" - Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood
This one is for any country fans out there. Let's be honest: what better country duo could there be besides these two gorgeous Southern gals? None. These two kill this girl power song. Period. End of story.
"Lip Gloss" - Lil Mama
This song was a late entry to this list. I picked it because A) it is Lil Mama and B) there is nothing better than walking to class listening to this song. If I could actually dance, this would be the first song I would choreograph something to. It makes you feel on top of the world. With lines like "Loreal got the most watermelon crushes, that's probably the reason all the boys got crushes," this song will pump you up instantly.
"Flawless Remix" - Beyoncé feat. Nicki Minaj
Yes, this is the second Beyoncé song on the playlist (plot twist it is not the last) but this a a special one because its features the ever BA Nicki Minaj. The original version of this song is great but Nicki puts it over the top. This song is all about how beautiful and perfect we all are. Some would call it conceited but lets be honest, we did wake up like this and we are #flawless.
"Oh No!" - Mariana and the Diamonds
I first heard this song on a dance video game and I have loved it ever since. If Blair Waldorf ran a country, this would be the national anthem. I guarantee it. "Oh No!" is all about owning your decisions and being independent. It is truly a must have on this playlist.
"Here" - Alessia Cara
In "Here," Alessia Cara talks about a different aspects of being independent by writing a song about not fitting in with the "in crowd" all the time. This song is basically just her saying "Hey sometimes I like to be alone. Do not bother me." Let's be honest: we all feel this way sometimes. With more serious lyrics and more alternative vibe, this song stands apart from some of the others on this list. But, it fits right in because it is perfect.
"Love Myself" - Hailee Steinfeld
This is another new song and before you say anything about it just being a more pop version of "Flawless," just listen to it; the beat is catchy, the message is great, and Hailee Steinfeld herself fantastic.
"Diva" - Beyoncé
Of course, we are closing out the playlist with the Queen. "Diva" is one of her older but still appreciated songs, and for good reason. If you do not believe Beyoncé when she says that "A diva is a female version of a hustler," there is clearly something wrong with you. Beyoncé absolutely kills this song because listening to "Diva" will make you feel ten feet tall instantly.
I hope you have enjoyed this list of a few of my favorites. This playlist could go on and on but these nine are good for now. Just remember, girl power is everything and confidence is not conceited, it is beautiful. Happy jamming out.
