I saw a post on Tumblr once that talked about places where reality is altered, and after going to one of those places this weekend I realized how oddly beautiful these places are. So come with me on a little adventure to some honestly surreal and eerie places you can spend your time.
1. Your Bedroom at 5 am
The house is quiet, everyone else is asleep, and your head is kind of fuzzy because you haven't slept yet. Everything feels slightly fake and time seems to slow down. You are cozy.
2. Any Target
How else can they get literally every person that goes in there to buy things they don't need? Nothing is real in Target. I walked into a target with my friends the other night not needing a thing and walked out with a new pair of pants. Maybe it's the florescent lighting.
3. Abandoned Houses in Your Neighborhood
You don't really know how or why it became abandoned, but you do know that everyone has their own version of the story. Every time you go past it, a weird, gloomy feeling washes over you.
4. The Lighting Section at Home Improvement Stores
I have always been amazed at the lighting section. They are so different than any other part of the store. You can't help but look up in wonder at all of the different lights.
5. Empty Beaches
The only thing you can hear is the waves crashing and your feet in the sand. The birds fly without any sense of purpose. Your heart speeds up the further you walk and the wind hits your face with a salty spray. Your skin is cold but you are warm inside.
6. Playgrounds at Night
There's nothing more spooky than a playground at night. Period.
7. On a Boat in the Middle of a Lake
Nothing matters when you are speeding through the water on a boat. Your hair is flying around, the boat is bouncing, time stops because like I said, nothing matters on a boat. Now you know why so many people buy boats.
8. The Mineola Hotel
The Mineola is an old hotel in Fox Lake, Illinois. It is currently closed down and for sale, slowly decaying. This place was home to Al Capone back in his hiding-from-the-cops days. Growing up in the area you hear the stories, and every time after that, you can't help but get chills thinking about its past life.
9. Hospital Waiting Rooms
Meant to give an air of comfort, hospital waiting rooms are where time slows to a near stop. People grieving, hoping and praying. Out-dated furniture and tacky art work make these rooms eerie and uncomfortable.
10. Early Mornings After Snow
Everything is still, and all sounds are muffled by the snow. The cold fills your lungs and you stop for just a second to take it all in. For a split second, everything stops.
Now, there are plenty other places, but these are a few that really stand out to me. Some people like to say time isn't real, and I like to think that those people really love these places. Next time you visit one of these spots I hope you take a second to notice how odd you feel suddenly, and how time seems to slow down.
