If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me what my major is, I would have enough money to skip college all together and live out a Pinterest-inspired, G-wagon driving, going-on-a-different-juice-cleanse-every-week life in the Hamptons.
For the most part, I think we are all trying to get on the path of graduating school, getting a degree, finding a job, making money, finding a husband or wife, having kids and have a 401k. No big deal right? Psych! Choosing a major that is going to help me execute this plan is ridiculously hard. Basically my entire future is riding on that one decision, so it's not something to take lightly.
I, like so many other college students, have no idea what I want to study. I want my life to turn out a certain way where I end up happy, with a family, a lot of friends and a good career; I am just not sure how it is all going to start. It can be a little frightening to think that my nineteen-year-old self is going to decide what I will study and what field I will (hopefully) have a job in. There are so many choices and ways to go that can change the course of your life. Being torn between so many amazing things that could lead you to happiness is never going to be an easy choice.
As cheesy as it sounds, the only thing that can lead you to a decision is your own heart. Decide what you want to do, and do not let anyone else influence the choice that you make. Yeah, hearing someone say "I'm majoring in mechanical engineering" can be intimidating, but that doesn't make it any less important than your history or music theory major. They are all important and will make you the best you that you can be. Every job that is being worked right now, will eventually be replaced by someone in our generation, everything from chefs to music producers to national park rangers and everything in between.
In the end, lots of people end up with jobs that have nothing to do with their majors anyways, so just know that being a college kid and stressing out about what path to take won't do you any good. Pick something you are passionate about and will work hard at, and everything will work out. I'm a firm believer that everyone will end up where they are meant to be in the end, no matter what major they pick.
