Felix Kjellberg, known internationally as PewDiePie, recently released his second mobile app, "PewDiePie's Tuber Simulator." The game had over 1 million downloads within 24 hours of its release, and there are already not just screenshots of the game, but other YouTubers trying their hand at the game. This is the second mobile game he has released, the first being "PewDiePie: Legend of the Brofist" (which, by the way, was highly rated on Steam, Google Play, and iTunes).
To give some context, PewDiePie currently has 48,200,315 subscribers to his channel on YouTube, and he also has a YouTube Red series, Scare PewDiePie, which usually relates to video games he's played in the past. His channel contains a variety of content: photoshop, free games, weird items one can but from the internet, and, of course, games. He's Swedish, though he travels and has lived in other places such as Italy and England. Felix is currently the most subscribed user on YouTube, and has been holding that title since December of 2013. So it's safe to say he's been around for a while! Regardless of who watches him most of the YouTube community at least knows the name. The fanart, fanfiction, and fangirling is endless. Though some argue that they no longer enjoy him because he has changed stylistically, it doesn't seem to be hindering him, and most still see him as a generally decent guy even if they don't indulge in his videos.
Now, the basis of the game: making videos. Tuber Simulator has several parallels to YouTube itself, but (obviously) there are differences. For example, the views and subscribers can be claimed and even streamed, and the views are used as currency to decorate one's recording room. The avatar can be customized, as can- well, most everything else. It does test one's patience in that you have to wait for videos to be completed and when one orders items there's shipping to deal with, but there's a sweet little mini game featuring Felix's dogs, Maya and Edgar, to help reduce your shipping time and kill a few minutes while you wait for that next achievement.
There are multiple currencies used in the game. Views, subscribers, brains, and bucks. Views are just that -- the amount of views one obtains per video. The views can then be spend to buy various items or play Puggle with Maya and Edgar. Subscribers help determine how your channel is doing- along with your player level, of course. Brains are put into a knowledge tree, where more skills and abilities can be unlocked in order to enhance your efficiency. And finally, bucks operate similarly to views. However, they are only used for specific things, such as rushing shipping or buying a new customization for a particular item -- usually your avatar or your computer.
And then there's Sponsor Eagle Deliveries. They help, but they don't exactly... make sense.
But anyhow, there's neat music, sleepy cats, and quests that can help advance you as well. One can even visit his/her friend's room, assuming he/she knows under what name to search for them. Other YouTubers such as CinnamonToastKen and JackSepticEye have posted videos of them playing the game, giving their viewers a glance at it if they're interested in trying the game for themselves (though some reviews have more sass and swearing than others!).
All in all, the game has taken off. It's hard to tell how long it'll have this kind of popularity, but one thing's for certain: people are pretty taken with it now. I enjoy playing it myself, even though I just started this morning. The game is free, so if you don't like it, just delete it! It's a fun little game, created by a man who means well. Sounds good to me. And apparently, I'm not the only one.
