"There are only 140 students in your freshman class? You must hate going to such a small school." As a student who lives on a small campus, I can assure you that it is far different than a large state college. As a Floridian, I had always dreamed of going to University of Florida or Florida State University. It came as quite a shock to the people who knew me when I decided on Harriet L Wilkes Honors College, a tiny campus located in the middle of suburbia.
What people do not think about are the many benefits of living on a small campus:
1. Not having to worry about parking because it is a five minute walk to any part of the campus.
2. Getting at least one "good morning" or "hey, how's it going" anywhere you go.
3. Orientation is a week long instead of a weekend long, filled with ice-breaker activities, 20 person human knot challenges, and aggressive games of rock, paper, scissors.
4. You are not just another face in the crowd, all of your professors know you by name.
5. You also know all of your professors, custodial staff, cafeteria staff, and office staff on a personal level.
6. Never having to wait in a long line for food.
7. You live in the same residence hall as all of your friends.
8. Rolling out of bed 10 minutes before your class starts and still making it with time to spare.
9. Getting your own room that you do not have to share with anyone.
10. Being able to go to your professor after class for help and they actually take the time to make sure you understand the material.
11. Creating tight-knit friendships with people of different cultures, majors, and walks of life.
12. A private school education at public school tuition (you're welcome Mom)
13. Never worrying about sitting alone at lunch or dinner because you always know at least one person in the dining hall.
14. Being able to ask any upperclassmen for help with a class because odds are they took it with the same professor.
15. Falling so in love with your tiny school you could not imagine being anywhere else.
