We've all had those days where we wake up after a great nights sleep, ready to take on the day! You get dressed, dance around your room, blast some upbeat music, then open the window to let the sunshine through. Then your mood does a complete 180. Where is my beautiful, bright sun? What even are those terrible, gross drops of water splashing on my window? What is that disgusting gray color that fills the sky? And where is my beautiful, bright blue sky with bright white cotton candy clouds scattered throughout? Why is this happening to me?!
Don't get me wrong, sometimes, rain can be great. You can show off those shiny new rain boots that are perfect for jumping in the puddles while no one is looking. And when you aren't accidentally hitting someone in the face with them, umbrellas can be so much fun. The best part of all? Rain makes things grow. Flowers start to bloom and a beautiful rainbow usually appears! I love rain. It's great and causes amazing things to happen. But, it's not supposed to rain today. Not on the day where you looked forward to wearing your adorable, flowy skirt to class, and got your hair perfectly straight. The day that you were going to lay on the soft, green grass and do homework with your friends. This is the opposite of what you had planned. But you can't control mother nature. So, on days like this, your best bet is to crawl back under your covers until the rain stops. Feel free to stuff yourself with junk food and scroll through Facebook until your fingers cramp up. You'll probably find yourself overthinking every detail of your life. From the time you got lost for two seconds in the grocery store when you were little to the guy who just broke your heart, rain always seems to bring out the darkest of times. Just go with it. If you're going to replay your whole life over in your head, then a rainy day is the best day to do it.
However, there is one crucial part of a rainy day that you will need, the perfect rainy day soundtrack. But don't fret, you won't have to make this playlist ahead of time. I have gone ahead and made the most amazing rainy day playlist to help you get through this gross, disgusting weather or just a really bad day.
You're welcome!
1. Over You (feat. A Great Big World) by Ingrid Michelson
This is the perfect song to reminisce about past relationships that have ended badly. Ingrid Michelson and A Great Big World slay this beautifully tragic song about what it's like pretending to be over somebody that you are still in love with. Allow yourself to sing as loudly as possible whilst crying your eyes out. It's raining outside and your day is ruined, so let it out.
Key Lyric: "I'm falling around you."
2. The Scientist by Coldplay
Classic Coldplay, always turning people into an emotional wreck. Take some time to think about the world and who you are as a person. Close your eyes and listen to the lyrics. They really do make you think.
Key Lyric: "Tell me you love me. Come back to haunt me."
3. Vienna by Billy Joel
Life can be tough. Just remember that you still have a long life ahead of you. Take some time to rest and pretend the rest of the world isn't there. You don't have to be strong all the time.
Key Lyric: "Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true."
4. Stone Cold by Demi Lovato
Some of the notes that Demi hits in this ballad will leave you speechless. Who even knew it was humanly possible to hit that last note? Stone cold will make you feel powerful if you try to sing alone with it. But, if you decide to lay back and listen to the lyrics, then it just might break your heart. Overall, it's an amazing song that's perfect for a rainy day spent indoors thinking about life.
Key Lyric: "I was your amber, but now she's your shade of gold."
5. I Hope You Dance by LeeAnn Womack
Do I even have to give an explanation for why this song is on here?
Key Lyric: "I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean."
6. Apologies by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
This song could be about something completely random like cats or alpacas and I would still love it. Grace Potter's voice is so perfect in this song that I get chills every time it plays. The beautiful lyrics are just the cherry on top.
Key Lyric: "It's amazing to see me reading through this scene of love and fear and apologies."
7. She Used To Be Mine by Sara Bareilles
I'm sure almost every young girl in high school or college can identify with this song one way or another. It's about remembering who you used to be, even though that girl wasn't perfect. The emotion behind Sara Bareilles voice hits you like a freight train. It's emotional, relatable and beautiful. Everything you need smushed into one song that is just what you need to hear on a rainy day. So, go ahead and stare out the window dramatically as the drops fall down and ponder life.
Key Lyric: "And you're not what I asked for. If i'm honest I know I would give it all back for a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two."
8. Hero by Regina Spektor
Regina Spektor is known for her crazy vocals. She tests the limits of her voice often in her song. Hero gives you the feeling needed for a rainy day. Betrayal, despair, loss. Scream these lyrics at the sky. Curse the rain for ruining your day.
Key Lyric: "I'm the hero of the story. Don't need to be saved."
9. Lost Stars by Adam Levine
The Oscar nominated song from the movie Begin Again will make you want to laugh and cry all at the same time. If you'd prefer a softer and slower version, Keira Knightley also performs the song. I also strongly recommend that you check out the movie starring Keira Knightley, Adam Levine, Mark Ruffalo and Hailee Steinfeld. It's just as brilliant as its soundtrack.
Key Lyric: "I'll be damned, cupids demanding back his arrow. So let's get drunk on our tears."
10. Say Anything by Tristan Pettyman
These lyrics are perfect for when all you can think about are the words you wish you could say. A calm, slow song that keeps it interesting with thought provoking lyrics.
Key Lyric: "Yeah your mind was always moving, but your thoughts never made a sound."
11. Come Over (Original Mixtape) by Sam Hunt
This song, originally performed by Kenny Chesney, but written by Sam Hunt can easily bring up old memories. If you need a good cry, listen to Sam Hunt's version. The acoustic guitar makes it feel much more personal.
Key Lyric: "Forget about your friends, you know they're gonna say we're bad for each other, but we ain't good for anyone else."
12. Nothing Left To Lose by Kari Kimmel
A song to listen to when you hit rock bottom. Or your plans were cancelled because of a thunderstorm. But, hey, that sucks too.
Key Lyric: "I gave my heart while it was beating. And it was so beautiful when it was needed."
13. Merry Go Round by Kacey Musgraves
This one goes out to all the country fans. If you're tired of being judged and want to be done with people who make you feel bad, then sing along to this. Don't let anyone judge you for your inexperienced singing voice.
Key Lyric: "Just like dust, we settle in this town."
14. Sweet and Low (Acoustic Version) by Augustana
A slow song that will keep you relaxed and is the best song to listen to as you try and shove as many cookies in your mouth as possible and try to forget the rain. No regrets.
Key Lyric: "I said well hell is so close and heaven's out of reach."
15. I Hope It Rains- Jana Kramer
Finally, if you want to lift your spirits a little bit, think about all the people you can't stand that are stuck outside in the freezing cold rain and mud. Maybe rain is not such a bad thing every once in awhile.
Key Lyric: "I hope she's in heels and some little white shorts."
If you've listened to all of these songs two or three times and have decided its time to throw on your rain boots and grab an umbrella, then here are a few songs to get you pumped to go puddle jumping.
1. Carried Away by Passion Pit
This song will instantly make you want to dance like a crazy person.
Key Lyrics: "Listen, I don't really know you and I don't think I want to. But, I think I can fake it if you can."
2. Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Grab your closest friends and twirl through the rain outside. Try to forget about how nice the sun would feel on your skin and focus on the great company you get to spend time with.
Key Lyrics: The entire exchange between Jade and Alexander.
3. Heroes by David Bowie
In honor of the recently deceased legend, take a drive with your favorite people. Roll down the windows and let the rain hit your face. Blast this song through the speakers and sing along because you're only young once.
Key Lyrics: "We can be heroes, just for one day."
4. Grace Kelly by MIKA
Learn all the lyrics and make up a crazy dance routine to lift your spirits. While you're at it, try to make sense of the incredibly strange music video. That could kill a lot of time.
Key Lyric: "I've gone identity mad!"
5. Singin' in the Rain by Gene Kelly.
Enough Said. Now get out there and sing your pretty little heart out.
Whether you dance your way through it or hide under your covers, I hope these songs will help you make it through those unexpected rainy days.
