Dear Society,
I wear makeup. Definitely not every day, but I do wear it. I absolutely love going to Sephora on the weekend and buying myself something new and beautiful to wear to class or a night out with friends. I experiment with bold lipsticks because it's fun to do something different. I wear makeup because it makes me feel beautiful. I don't wear makeup for you.
So why is it such an issue? Why does the amount of foundation I put on matter to you? Why is it that when you tell us we need to look a certain way to be attractive, you then turn around and tell us we're not doing it right or that we don't look good? Why go through all of the trouble of telling us how you want things to be just to tear us down? It's not like I'm destroying the world or insulting families with a makeup brush.
Makeup is a form of self-expression, and we're all allowed to use it as much or as little as we want. We're allowed to use whatever colors and products we want. Makeup is like an art, and each person that uses it is an artist, free to fill their canvasses with whatever they feel like. Not everyone has the same skill set, but the finished product is something that should be appreciated as art that makes the person who created it feel happy and proud, not confused and insulted.
It's refreshing to be fearlessly different, but that is hard to be when surrounded by a society like you. Throwing insults at those that do use makeup sends the wrong message to the people trying to express themselves or feel better about their appearances. There is no need to call someone ugly, laugh at them, or say they're insecure for wearing makeup because it creates more rejection in a world that already has enough of it.
I'm not asking for you to love everyone's choice of makeup, I know everyone has their own sense of what they do and do not like. I'm asking for a lack of negative comments towards people within the makeup-using community. If someone is doing something that makes them happy, there's no reason to prevent them from doing so, because you would probably be upset too. Besides, it's pretty easy to follow the "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," rule. I'm just saying.
