The end of October ushers in a memorable time for the average college student. A tradition that was once worn out of style returns in flamboyant fashion as college students across the Untied States come together in zany and ridiculous costumes to celebrate Halloween. At some colleges, the name is changed to “Halloweekend.”
Depending on commitment level, you may have designed, purchased, and planned out one or multiple costumes for the weekend. For some, the craziness begins on the Wednesday before the actual holiday. With great care, students go to Savers, Party City, or raid their closets to find costumes, clothes, or accessories to make up either the funniest or scariest costumes possible.
Others, like myself, wait until the day before and find their costume. For some, it’s a matter of finding that one costume that strikes a cord within you. You either see it and you say “I love it” or “I hate it.” Once you find “the one,” you commit yourself to the costume and embrace it.
As the title of this article suggests, I was a penguin.
Yes, I was a member of the multicolored and enthusiastic costume parade of college kids throughout Providence College’s campus and the sidewalks of Eaton Street. The joy, laughter, and insanity of seeing a toy soldier, a cat, someone from that favorite movie of yours, Whitey Bulger, a hippie, or the Statue of Liberty makes you feel pure bliss and happiness.
After Halloweekend concluded, I realized that I chose wisely. I was the penguin. I am the penguin. To share my coming of age moment, here are a few things to bring out the inner penguin in you.
1. Keep Calm and Waddle On
Wherever life or the night takes you, strut your flippers and your feet and go with the flow.
2. Put your flippers in the air if you just don’t care
Let all the haters hate how "cool you are."
3. Be the penguin
Be one with your inner penguin.
4. “Just smile and wave, boys”
Wave at everyone and anyone, but don't let them know your plans.
5. Break out into your "Happy Feet"
Do your thing! Do your dance!
6. Keep it classy with your suit and tie
Penguins wear a suit all the time; you should too.
7. Welcome everyone to your club
Everyone's welcome to join Club Penguin! Just don't swear in the chat box.
8. And finally, just chill out!
Simply said.
