My parents are the most generous, hardworking individuals I know. The generosity and grace I see in my parents are qualities I hope my own kiddos will see in me.
My parents have always had high expectations for my sister and me, but not the kind of expectations that are unachievable. They simply have expectations that any good parent would.
Work hard. Be respectful. Do well in school. But most importantly, do what makes you happy.
My parents have modeled what giving really means. Whether it's giving to the church or just helping a family member or friend in need, they do it compassionately and without the need to be noticed.
My parents have taught me that generosity pays itself forward. But, being generous doesn't always mean offering money to people in need; generosity can be something as simple as offering a smile. They've taught me that generosity doesn't discriminate. You help everyone. You love everyone.
My parents have also taught me this: You get out of life what you put in.
As I journey through my college years, I constantly have one thought lurking: "I am so thankful for how my parents raised me."
I see girls disrespecting themselves and friends; I see boys doing the same. I see classmates giving it 50% on a regular basis, but expecting to succeed. These people are usually shocked when life smacks them in the face.
You aren't going to get an A if you don't put in the work. You aren't going to get the job if you don't prepare for the interview.
I'm always grateful my parents taught me to lend a hand, not to expect life to be handed to me.
It has made me a better person and a harder worker.
Thanks, Mom and Dad. You've helped me blossom in ways you probably don't even realize!
You guys ROCK.
