One of the most stressful things that I have ever encounter here at UCI is trying to figure out my second year housing situation. The housing process is so incredibly cryptic and at the end you’re not even satisfied with your living situation. But it's okay, I'm still smiling...barely.
First off, all freshmen should appreciate their little dank dorm rooms because it’ll be the last time you will be helped out in you housing endeavors.
1. When you’re about two and a half months into school and you’re just now getting to know people a little better, guess what? You have to find roommates and figure out your housing situation for next year! What a sudden thing to thrust upon a student who barely knows the names of all of their hall mates, let alone how much financial aid they will have the following school year or if they will even enroll in summer school! Isn’t that great!
2. When the only on-campus housing communities that offer a 9-month lease are also the two housing communities that accept the lease amount of residents.
3. Here’s the cherry one top. The remaining guaranteed housing communities only offer 12-month leases! WE ALL GET TO PAY FOR HOUSING ALL YEAR LONG! WOOHOO!
4. Alas, a few weeks after applying for guaranteed housing you final get assigned your roommates and lease! And you’re given a short deadline to sign your soul to the devil (I mean sign the lease) or you lose your guaranteed housing for next year!
5. My favorite part of this whole housing excursion would probably have to be trying to find a subleaser for the summer because you were so lucky to get a June to June lease!
6. Spamming all the UCI housing Facebook pages about my sublease is my favorite pass time. What’s even greater is that the housing communities told you that subleasing was soooo easy! Don’t you just love it when you’re lied to and sign a binding legal contract that you can’t get out of???
7. When you finally get a Facebook message about your sublease and the person wants to rent if for less than half of the rooms actual cost. Why yes, I would love to pay for you to live in my room. How did you know?
8. It’s okay. You only have until next November to repeat this whole process all over again.
Thanks for looking out for us, UCI.
