Packing: The Forgotten Essentials

What everyone forgets they need.

Packing: The Forgotten Essentials

It's officially that time of year for moving into or back to school. (Disclaimer: I moved in on the 24th). We all have immense piles of stuff we bring to college, whether it's because we overpack or because we buy new stuff out of excitement. Whatever your reason is here are a few things you need to have when you move into a dorm:

1. A step stool

If your bed is raised off the ground and you're short like me, you need one so you don't go home purple and bruised for the holidays from constantly jumping in and out of bed every day.

2. A fan (or two)

It's still summer across the country and colleges are economical about air conditioning (aka there is none). So, you and your roommate should each get fans just to be on the safe side. That way, you'll still have one if someone's breaks. (This happened to my roommate's box fan, but I don't know how). My tiny Honeywell fan has lasted five years now, as of move-in day. Pro-tip: Get one that oscillates to cool the whole room! Your roommate(s) will thank you.

3. A printer

If you want to be cost-effective you can share one, that someone brings but this should definitely be on your list. You do not want to be the student that doesn't have their midterm paper because they finished it at 4 a.m. and slept until the last second, leaving no time for a library pit-stop. Professors love things printed and double-spaced so they can write comments.

4. Scissors

My roommate and I didn't have any scissors when we got to school, so my dear mother got two pairs for a dollar at CVS at 10 p.m. before driving the six hours back to Atlanta. (She is the answer to all my problems.)

You will need scissors, eventually, whether it's to cut papers to a certain size, open packages or for an art project. If you have a pair in your desk you won't have to waste twenty minutes asking everyone on the hall for a pair.

I hope this helps you out a little with your packing woes. Have a great year!

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
