Oxford's Best (Un)Known Secrets
law.olemiss.edu

For many, it is difficult to understand why the quaint town of Oxford, Mississippi, is consistently ranked as the best college town in the United States by numerous media outlets, year after year. At first glance, Oxford is just a sleepy little town sprawling with local businesses as well as a few national franchises—nothing out of the ordinary. A strong community network for parents with great school districts. But what is it about this one-horse town that really reels in the constantly growing numbers of college students each year? I would say it is the wonderful academic programs offered at the flagship university, however, it is so much more. What keeps this little, big city alive is held within its secrets and traditions. In case you have yet to indulge into all the wonders Oxford, Mississippi, has to offer below is a list of the best (un)known secrets and traditions you must experience.

1. Find the "after hours entrance" to Vaught Hemingway Stadium

You'll probably want to find the secret passage to the Vaught when the sun goes down. The adrenaline rush is incredible when you have the opportunity to see the same view of many football legends. Although you're likely to get caught during football season, the punishment is normally a slap on the wrist. Getting into the stadium is simpler than you would think.

This is also a trespassing violation, so enter at your own risk.

2. Visit with Faulkner

Take a hike through the woods on the lesser-known trail behind the university's museum all the way to Rowan Oak at night. Legend has it, if you sit around for long enough you can hear the voices of Yoknapatawpha residents whisper throughout the branches of the mighty oaks. If you're lucky, Mr. Faulkner might make an appearance.

3. Eat a Secret Grilled Cheese

Possibly, the greatest secret to ever exist (excluding Santa Claus) is Oxford's own secret grilled cheese place. I will not disclose too much information due to the owners request for privacy, however if you're ever on The Square in need of a gourmet grilled cheese, it's not too far away. Beware, the restaurant's hours, 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., make getting a table difficult. I suggest the Bad A** Mother F***ER, a grilled cheese composed of fried mozzarella sticks, cheddar, and bacon.

4. Walk the underground tunnels

It is said to have once served as a secret passage for James Meredith to enter the university. The walls are now tastefully covered in graffiti from college students, so bring your spray paint, and leave your mark.

5. The Ole Miss Freshman Bucket List

Your orientation leader will mention this a million times and never tell you exactly what is on this infamous list. It has taken some students all five years of college to finally complete the list, but it's suggested you finish by the day you move out of your dorm so you can take the next class of upcoming freshman to the Door Knob to the Universe.

6. Gaze into the sky at the Door Knob to the Universe

Just tell an upperclassman you want to go see it. They'll be more than glad to show you this beauty.

7. Chicken-on-a-Stick

Once again, another secret food off of The Square. Several gas stations have begun to replicate this delicacy, however, there is only one true location for an authentic chicken-on-a-stick.

8. Secret Hideaway in The Student Union

The Union is huge with many nooks and crannies that may not be seen with the naked eye. However, there is one secret hideaway in the Union that might actually make traveling through the building quicker during the launch rush or on game days.

While this is just a short list of great secrets, there is more. But thats a secret I'll never tell. You know you love me, xoxo

Happy Hunting!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
