On Sept. 26, 2015, I made a decision that changed that my life forever; I decided to adopt a baby bunny. It had always been a dream of mine to care for and love my own bunny. I began to research and look up different types of bunnies as well as how to care for them. After watching countless videos of bunny care, I was absolutely set on adopting one of these furry creatures to call my own.
While searching for bunny supplies on Craigslist, I came upon a listing of a girl in college selling her pet bunny with a cage, food, bedding, hay and many more supplies because she was allergic and could not care for her anymore. A black lion head bunny, only 9 months old, and litter box trained? She was perfect.
The second I saw the picture I knew she would be mine, I already named her Luna in my head. With permission from my current roommates as well as my parents, I took Luna home. At first she was terrified to be in room, she was shaking and barely eating. After a few days though, Luna began to warm up to her new home and eventually started to learn that I am her mother.
Rabbits are very intelligent animals. They learn very quickly and have almost as much intelligence as a cat or dog; they can even learn to come when called. I also bought a small animal leash for Luna and am training her to enjoy wearing it so we can go on walks outside together. She understands when it's breakfast time as well as when she will get a treat. She also likes to pose for pictures and is a great model.
Most people think that in college, students would have no time to care for a pet. While this can be true for some students, I have learned to make time to give Luna love during the day. Nothing makes me happier than coming home to see her hopping around her cage. If you love animals as much as I do, being an animal mother in college actually has more benefits than downsides. Luna is really soft and enjoys being pet and brushed, petting her soft fur really calms me down after a long day of stress in school. I like to let her hop around my room so she can get exercise and my roommates love to play with her too. Owning a pet in college was one of the best choices I made and I couldn’t be happier caring for Luna.
