The bubble of the University of Florida may actually not be a bubble after all. We all know the mainstream Gainesville attractions: Payne's Prairie, Ginnie Springs, Dragonfly, football games. Yet, there is so much more to Gainesville than our scooters can take us. If we just look hard enough, we can find that our bubble of a college town covers many more aspects of the college and cultural experience than we ever thought to be possible. Here are a few of the many attractions and events that take place around us every semester that we often fail to notice:
1. Bartending class at the Reitz Union
Your dream of becoming a bartender can actually come true with UF’s own bartending classes at the Reitz. For only $50, you can learn proper mixing techniques, bartending skills, product information, and how to responsibly consume alcohol. Only the best of liquors will be used! Just make sure you’re 21 when you sign up because a fake Gator 1 won’t work here.
2. Farmer's Market
Every Wednesday from 4-7 p.m., come listen to music by local musicians as you stroll along Union Street looking at fresh produce and unique art by Gainesville artists. This is a relaxing and fun way to get involved in the Gainesville community and take advantage of the local products right here in our backyard.
3. Art Festivals
Keep an eye out for the many art festivals that take place year-round in downtown Gainesville. Go enjoy some live music, beautiful art and sculptures, and of course kettle corn with your friends or even your parents if they're in town. If you're a dog lover, you're guaranteed to find some neighborhood dogs that will temporarily cure your "pet-sickness."
4. 34th Street Wall
Just outside of campus on 34th Street, there is an extremely decorative wall that has years of Gainesville history literally painted on it. People from all aspects of Gainesville come to promote their friend's birthdays, memories, advertisements, artistry, their Gator pride, and much more on this very canvas. Take a can of spray paint and leave an imprint on Gainesville, literally.
5. Cymplify
If you're tired of the library, need a delicious snack or meal, or just want a cool hangout with some friends, then definitely head over to Cymplify. An easy drive near the Oaks Mall, Cymplify is an incredible Gainesville hangout that can serve as a study spot, coffee haven, food getaway, or just a relaxed good time. Cymplify has a lot to offer, so don't miss out on the coffee, ice cream, trinkets sold in the shop, brunch on Sundays with live music, fun T-shirts, and enjoyable atmosphere.
6. "Non-Basic" Brunch
Don't call to check if Peach Valley or Flying Biscuit have any tables available because there are so many more unique and delicious places to take your parents/visitors to on the weekends. East End Eatery, The Jones, and Harvest Cafe are just a few amazing brunch places with creative dishes and soothing atmospheres. There are multiple healthy options at each of these restaurants, including vegetarian and vegan meals as well!
7. Mexican Food (Not Chipotle or Tijuana Flats)
As easy as it is to lean toward established and well-known food chains for your Mexican cravings, there are definitely other options around Gainesville that serve authentic Mexican food. La Tienda, Burrito Bros., Burrito Famous, and El Indio Real are some of the tasty options available just when you feel like it's time to experience something else.
8. High Dive
Whether your music preference is indie rock, EDM, reggae, alternative, and much more, the High Dive might be the perfect escape for you from your typical Fats and Pizza-by-the-Slice nights. With a cozy bar, concert apparel, and energetic concert room, the feel of the High Dive will draw you in and make for some memorable nights with incredible live music vibes. Take a dive into the past with tickets to the Ying Yang Twins on Oct. 2 or hang with Cherub on Oct. 13.
9. Satchel's
Voted as one of the most unique pizza places in the country, Satchel's combines quality food with a unique atmosphere. Whether you choose to eat in a hippy '70s Volkswagon bus, a table in the trees, or the general seating area with a toy train circling the ceiling above you, there will never be a dull moment. Customize your pizza any way you like it, and enjoy surroundings that seem to never rest.
