We as Americans take pride in what we offer. Freedom of speech, right to bear arms, and the American Dream of fight for what you want and get. We hold ourselves to a standard of being a nation of immigrants. We are a people that came from all walks of life and formed a more perfect union. But, what if we haven’t? What if this very diversity that we rejoice about is actually what is causing our nation to tear itself apart?
What do I mean? I am saying this. That, as a nation, we are so fixated on being diverse that we allow ourselves to forms walls to one another. We say we want to respect one’s culture so let us not touch it. We do not agree with this culture so let us rid of it all together. We treat different cultures from ours as if we are viewing them through a looking glass. We see them and learn about them but that’s it. We do not really delve in and be with the people that developed said cultures.
But, what if we did? What if we decided to remove the glass and step forward and be with the people? What if we stop putting labels on people and societies and start developing new cultures? Even if we wanted to, how do we do that?
This is what I see. I see a nation of people who approach one another and see each other’s cultures. But, not just see them work in them. Forming a new culture, an American culture. Where people take what makes their cultures great and mesh them together. Make a civilization where there are no weaknesses because each culture that developed the American society strengthens one another. Where one culture is weak, another is stronger. And these cultures form rings of platinum that cannot be broken. I do not simply mean making new foods like Korean tacos or fortune cookies. These forms of cultural blends are a small start to something better! It forms a culture where the people are fighting for one another because they all are united in this new culture they have formed.
This is not an easy task. In order to do this, we need to realize that we as a people are looking through the glass at one another as if we are in lab room. Once we realize the problem that is we can take a step through the glass and work on the platinum links. This is what America should be. The world sees America as a melting pot of cultures and I think it is time that we started to living up to that name.
