Dear Summer,
When I think of you, the first thing that comes to mind is the song "In Summer." Yes, you guessed it. The song sung by the little snowman Olaf who doesn't have a clue about what summer is. You know, "When life gets rough, I like to hold on to my dream, Of relaxing in the summer sun, just lettin' off steam."
And now that we're out of school, I think that we are all just a little bit like Olaf. We just finished a hard year of school and we just need a break. No one wants to think about homework, projects, tests, midterms, finals or grades. It's about the necessary break to de-stress and relax.
For some people, summer means full-time work. For others, it means traveling the world and visiting as many different countries as possible. And for others still, summer means kicking back, relaxing and catching up with high school friends. And it's in the midst of those things that sometimes we forget some very important people. Our families. Our parents know that we're in college now and that soon, we won't be living with them anymore. Sometimes we forget that small detail. Sometimes our parents talk to our friends' parents and wonder why we're never home; why we're always spending time with our friends. Of course, they know that we've changed since they dropped us off that first day of our freshman year, but they still can't help but wonder. Our siblings miss us too.
Thank you, summer, for providing us with a much-needed break. Thank you for giving us the time to stop thinking about school work. Thank you for letting us spend a few short months with the people that we grew up with who helped us to become the people we are today. Thank you for giving us the time to make a few dollars to pay off our student loans and for letting us become cultured individuals. Most importantly, though, thank you for giving us time with our families. Thank you for giving us three short months to make up for the nine months we spend away at school. Thank you for giving us more time to learn from our parents and to be the best brothers and sisters we can be.
Summer, you're a blessing to so many of us and sometimes we take you for granted. For most of us, summer will end once we leave college. We'll acquire full-time jobs and summer break will become a thing of the past. And it's usually around then that we realize that we took the summer for granted. We think of all the time we spent at bonfires, all the time we spent working, and we wish we would've had time to make more memories.
Maybe this summer, we'll remember to spend more time and make more memories for the people who have always and will always be there for us no matter what. But we couldn't do it without you, summer.
Thank you,
A college student
