Full disclosure: I write “should know” because I really ought to know more about sports before writing an article about them. The truth is that I couldn’t care less. I’ve tried to become passionate, or at least know the basic rules and terms surrounding football or basketball, to no avail (a trend that I’m sure that my boyfriend really wish had stuck). Yet, considering such, I believe that offers me an objective opinion on the issue at hand: bandwagoners.
My main issue with “loyal” fans who adamantly and vehemently condemn new fans is that it’s absolutely illogical to laud oneself for being a “better” fan just because you’ve been loyal to that team for a longer period of time. Additionally, bandwagoners benefit the economy. Before you start ranting, let me tell you right now that your argument is worse than the Saints' defense this year.
All fans are new at some point in time, regardless of if it started when you were a wee lamb in elementary school and if you’ve been a true blue fan ever since. How does simply sticking up for the same team every season make you a superior fan compared to someone who just started buying their paraphernalia? Loyalty is entirely subjective and I’m fairly confident that the players don’t mind whether those cheering for them are new to the stadium or not. Secondly, if you’re like most sports fans who I encounter, you’d also consider yourself as patriotic as Cloyd Rivers. How can a disciple of free enterprise disapprove of an entire community that also supports it? Bandwagoners buy merchandise in bulk once the Superbowl or World Series rolls around and that’s something that we can all appreciate.
So you do you, bandwagoners sports fans.
