To the people who tell me not to go into teaching,
I have been a girl with the dream of changing people's lives for as long as I can remember. You should know that. I’d give everything I have to change lives. I don’t know how you can tell me that they ways I believe I can do that are bad. I understand that in your mind, being a teacher is a pointless, low paying job but to me, it’s so much more. I haven’t even made it through college and I can feel the passion running through me. Don’t you remember when you had a passion for something? The feeling you got when you got to do that thing. Well for me the passion is connected to teaching. I have never wanted anything more. But I have you telling me I should do anything else. Why?
Is it because being a teacher doesn’t pay well? I don’t care. I don’t need the fanciest house or the best car. I have not nor will ever be that kind of person. I have always been simple, never wanting to spend certain amounts of money on things. I love the small house I live in and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Is it because I’ll be wasting my brainpower? That’s the furthest thing from the truth. It takes an intelligent person to be able to teach a class that comes in with each student having a different learning style. It’s not going to be a walk in the park but I’m up for the challenge.
Is it because I could “make a bigger difference” if I was something else? Why yes saving a life as a doctor or nurse is a great thing but think about this, how do those people become what they are? Teachers. Without a teacher to guide those people, it wouldn’t be an easy thing. Teachers help mold those people into what they will be. Doctors, Lawyers, the President, any job a person gets has a teacher who changed a student’s life and made them think maybe I can do that too.
So no, I will not change my mind. I am going to do this. I don’t care what you have to say. I will be a high school social studies teacher. I will teach the future generations that will become the leaders of this country. I will make a difference with your support or not.
