An Open Letter To My Service Dog

You are more to me than just a pet.

Dear Roscoe,

I am sorry that people can be so ignorant towards you. I'm sorry that people yell at us "No dogs allowed!" before we even get near a door. I'm sorry that strange ladies with squealing voices invade your space and pet you like I never told them to stop. I'm sorry people stare at you like you have no right to be there, when you have just as much right as I do. I promise that I tell them not to, and that I would educate them about you if they'd just ask first.

I've had you for a little over a month now, and I have to say, it has been an adventure. I've had people assume I'm blind, and have full conversations about it to the people around them, like the fact that they think I'm blind must mean I'm deaf, too. I've had people scream "DOG!" at the pair of us like they've never seen one in their life. I've had people point and stare and whisper and laugh. It's been an adventure, my invisible disability becoming visible. And I would not go back to the way my life was for anything. Something would be missing without you at my side.

You've brought me independence, peace, relief and a whole lot of happiness. I'm a proud dog mom when I watch you master new things, or complete the tasks you've been trained to do. I'm proud to see how excited you get to work, to put on your vest and go places with me. I'm proud to watch you conquer new things, and to grow as a team with you. I am happy to be your partner.

But I love you for more than just being my service dog. I love you for all the normal puppy things that you do. I love you when you wake me up at 2 a.m. to play in the rain, because you are a lab, after all. I love you when you physically steal the covers and kick me in your sleep. I love you when you step on me with your big feet because you just want to be a lap dog sometimes. And I love you when you scare me to death because you sleep so deep that sometimes I can't tell if you're breathing.

I'm honored, blessed and beyond excited to have you in my life. I can't wait to see what the future holds for us as a team.

Love,

Your handler

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
