An Open Letter to My Predecessor

Your graduation is so bittersweet.

An Open Letter to My Predecessor

I never really had a role model, because I didn't know what I wanted to do in my life or who I wanted to be. I looked up to a lot of people for their character and poise, but there was never someone I could point to that embodied so many qualities that I respected.

You, and everyone else who knew me three years ago, are aware that the beginning of my time at GW was more or less a mess. At the time, no one, including myself, would ever have guessed that I would be in the position I am in today.

Last year when you came back from studying abroad and began your term, there was no doubt that you had it together and were the woman for the job. You tackled the lowest of lows in the Spring, and the highest of highs in the Fall. Each step was taken with consideration and a realistic view. You stood up against unprecedented adversity, and you've continued to advocate even beyond the limits of your term.

Living with you gave me the "behind closed doors" view of your position. When you were not working on something for the chapter, you were balancing your academic and professional life. I don't think many people know how few hours you slept in 2014. I am also going to take this opportunity to point out how flawless you, are and sometimes I don't even want to get out of bed because a baseball cap and sweatshirt are in my future, and you literally have the most perfect hair and on-point outfits.

There was never a moment that you were not a leader. The hours we spent on the floor of our room for transitioning were so valuable, and I forever appreciate your openness in preparing me for my term. I have not met a woman more respected than you, and I am proud to have had the opportunity to learn from you. Thank you for being available 24/7 to laugh at ridiculous emails, or to help me navigate a sensitive issue. Thank you for equipping me with everything I need for the Fall semester, and supporting me as I establish myself in this role. Mostly, thank you for believing in me when I was doubting myself and my abilities.

You have become my role model, and while I know I can always reach out, I think I can speak on behalf of everyone when I say: I will miss your presence in the chapter.

P.S.- I am glad we joined presidential forces for the watermelon competition.

Once, Always.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
