An Open Letter To My Hometown Best Friend

I honestly don't know what I would do without you.

Going to college three and a half hours from home was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I learned how to be on my own, how to take care of myself and that I need to keep the people who are important to me close. I have made amazing friends at school but I could never get through my time being away without my friend back home.

I cannot thank you enough for being there for me through the good and bad times. You are one of two people I regularly talk to on the phone and you are the first person I usually want to share something exciting with. You listen to me complain about the annoying things I deal with throughout the day. I love that I can give you every detail about anything because you don't know the people I am talking about.

It doesn't matter how long we are apart, we are always able to pick up right where we left off. We are good at remembering funny things that happened months ago (you know exactly what I'm talking about) and we can talk about the same people for months without running out of stuff to say (Boy that she has been crushing on for a year and a half, I am talking about you).

You know almost everything about my family, and I love being able to talk about the crazy things they do with you. You are always there for me if I am upset and I hope you know that I am always going to be here for you.

Somehow we end up doing basically the same thing every time we hang out (get food, go shopping, complain about spending money) but it never gets old. We may get some funny looks when we start laughing over something stupid, but it's so much fun so who cares?

We can talk endlessly about Grey's Anatomy (and we always get upset about the same scenes) and I love finding pictures that I can send to you that I know will make you laugh.

We are getting to the point where we are going to get big-kid jobs (you start yours next week) and that is slightly terrifying but I know that it will not change anything between us and that we will always be close. It's exciting to see how much we have changed in the past six years and I know that we will get to experience so much more together.

You are probably the person I talk to the most often and I honestly have no idea what I would do without you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
