An Open Letter To The Harrison High School Seniors
Harrison High School

To all you HHS seniors...

As a junior in college, and former student of Harrison High School, I find that I ironically enough, continue to think about our small little town quite often.

I know that you’re all thinking about how much you can’t wait to get out of there, I was there once too, however I ask you to take all of these things into consideration before you venture off into the world…

I ask you to first and foremost eat as much as you can and to not think twice about it. You really will not find another Casa or Bagel shop wherever you end up… I’m not kidding. Not to mention that you won’t find bagels in general that are anywhere near the quality of bagels we are used to. That being said, you should probably eat pizza for every dinner until you leave, you won’t regret it- won’t find that anywhere either unfortunately.

I ask you to stay close with your peers, this is your last year spending every moment with these people. For most of you, you’ve attended the same school since 6th grade, probably more! Although you may be thinking about how great it’s going to be to finally meet some new people, I want you to participate in as many things as possible this year, these are memories that you will talk about for the rest of your life.

I ask you to say hi to the people in town, the faces that have been familiar to you for as long as you could remember. I find myself walking around campus and mistaking my peers for familiar faces from Harrison to this day.

I ask you to show your school spirit and have the time of your life at every pep rally, dance, and spirit week. You will never again get to participate in a school spirit week, so go all out, you have nothing to lose.

I ask you to appreciate all of the teachers you have become close to over the years. Visit your elementary school one more time. Go see your favorite teachers in LMK. There are times where I wish I was able to walk into some of my favorite teachers’ classrooms just to say hello, I can’t do that anymore, but I encourage you all to do that as often as possible this year.

I ask you, lastly, to please have fun. Don’t jump into college before you get there. Live this year to it’s fullest and you will get out of it what you put in, I promise.

And most importantly…. I ask you to remember where you came from when you do decide to venture outside of our little H-town. Once a husky, always a husky.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
