An Open Letter To El Niño

Dear El Niño,

I'm going to be honest and say that I didn't really know who you were when I first heard of you. But in my defense, the last time you really came around was 1997, when I was at the tender age of 2. So needless to say, I probably wasn't keeping up with the weather at that time.

But after this past week, I think it's safe to say that I know you quite well now. Yes, I noticed the hours of non stop rain going on outside. I read countless stories on social media about how my peers had to brave the storm. And I must admit, you are quite impressive. You really want to be seen, don't you?

Well, I don't blame you. If you haven't heard, California is pretty dry right now. We've suffered through too many brush fires. And now we actually have to ask for water in restaurants! Crazy right? So as you can see, California and other neighboring states really need you right now.

But don't let that get into your head. Like Uncle Ben said to young Peter Parker, "With great power comes great responsibility." I say the same to you, buddy. Those wildfires I was talking about earlier? They really did damage to the land it tore through. Much of that land is now susceptible to mudslides, and unfortunately, that same land is near many communities. Mix in a lot of rain from you, and the outcome will not be pretty.

Another thing that should be noted: No one knows how to drive in the rain. Honestly, all you need is five minutes of heavy downpour and suddenly there are 10 accidents on the freeway. And now you're bringing in at least a week's worth of rain? We might as well start walking now!

But really, the point of this letter is to just let you know that you are very much appreciated. It probably won't reverse the years -- long drought that we are going through, but it's a good start! I mean, there is actual water in the Los Angeles river now! Who would've thought?

At the same time, don't go crazy, either. You have a real potential of doing some serious damage, so don't mess up while you're ahead. Just keep people amazed and grateful, and I guarantee you will go far in this town.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
