An Open Letter To My Dog

I know what you’re thinking. How can I write a letter to my dog even though he can’t even read? I get that. Although he may not be able to understand this, I know fellow dog lovers out there will, and hopefully appreciate it. Dogs are hands down the most loyal and loving animals on earth. If you disagree, then I’m sorry, but you’re wrong. Okay, I’m kidding ... well, only slightly. As I think about my own pup, I realize that his simple presence has done so much for me over the years. As he embarks on his 10th year, there are some things I would like to thank him for.

As many people say, a dog is a man’s best friend. This animal is completely devoted to you, for you are his entire life. Since he doesn’t remember his puppy days, all he knows is that you have been the one to take care of him. From providing meals to daily walks, you are his main source of happiness. Even when I am having the worst day, a simple wag of my dog’s tail can cheer me up a bit. My dog still loves me when I mess up, and he will continue to love me no matter what I do with my life. It is overwhelming to think that in his eyes I am nothing but greatness.

For some unknown reason, my dog seems to know when I am having a bad day. I think that all dogs can tell when their owners are upset, and it bothers them. I’ll be laying in my bed feeling kinda down, and my dog will jump up just to comfort me. Nothing feels better than my dog’s head on my leg snoozing the hours away. He has even licked the tears off my face before, and while that may be gross, it demonstrates how much he truly loves me. Just like himself, your dog only wants you to be happy.

A dog’s unquestioned positive outlook on the world can be inspiring. They are always happy even when things aren’t so good for them. A dog can be in a lot of pain, but he will still wag his tail at the sight of his owner or a yummy treat. As people, we should be like them, and to always try to see the best in things and others. You do not get anything out of being negative, and in most cases, it can lead to your inevitable downfall. Next time you are feeling upset, think like a dog, and realize how many things there are to be happy about in the world. With this mindset, anything is possible.

Dogs have the purest soul, and we humans are blessed to have them with us on earth. From therapy dogs to police dogs, they are beneficial in so many ways. My dog will always be my best friend. Coming home from college and having him jump for joy fills me with a happiness I cannot even explain. I love him with all of my heart, and I wish he could stay with me forever.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
