An Open Letter To My College Roommates

Because my freshman year wouldn't be the same without you.

An Open Letter To My College Roommates

A college student has enough on their plate balancing a crazy class schedule, studying for countless exams, attempting to have a social life, and maybe some eating and breathing in between your hectic day. With a busy schedule, it's nice to come home to your dorm room and unwind and feel at home, and fortunate enough for me, my roommates turned into my family.

I heard many roommate horror stories upon entering college. I used to hear about people who lived with people with freaky habits that made it very hard to feel at home while living with them. I was afraid of someone stealing my stuff, or bringing people into the room I wasn't comfortable with, or just not relating to or having anything in common with my roommates in general. Have you ever seen "The Roommate" with Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester? Yeah, I was afraid of something like that happening. College is scary enough, let alone with a crazed and dangerous roommate stalking my every move.

Luckily, my roommates did not turn out to be like the crazy stories I kept hearing. They became the sisters I never had. They became a part my home away from home.

Thank you for staying up late with me and watching Impractical Jokers at impractical hours of the night. Thank you for your fashion advice when I need desperate help picking out my outfits for parties, and constantly telling me I'm not going to gain weight from eating that extra slice of pizza. Thank you for letting me practice my makeup skills on you on a Tuesday afternoon when you have nowhere to go. Thank you for being my best friends, and being there whenever I need someone. But most importantly, thank you for being my new family.

If I could give any piece of advice to incoming freshman that are resident students, I would tell them to find people who you can truly relate to and build an incredible friendship with. Look around you: almost everyone is in the same position as you are. They're confused, they might be a little lost, and most people are looking for a friend. College is meant to step out of your comfort zone, become more independent, and find your true self. The best way to expand your horizons and share new experiences is when you have people right by your side that are your best friends. Many people in college create friendships that last a lifetime. Don't be afraid to reach out to someone you think you could relate to, they might end up being some of the best people you've ever met. For me, those people are my roommates.

Here's to many more sleepless nights, dancing around in our pajamas, and memories that'll last a lifetime.

PS: I'm sorry I knocked over the fishbowl and almost killed our fish.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
