An Open Letter To The Christian Extremist

You're going about it all wrong.

An Open Letter To The Christian Extremist

When was the last time someone changed your mind by yelling at you? Probably never. So, why would you think that standing on the middle of campus yelling at college students would turn nonbelievers toward Christ?

When I was little, my father told me that Jesus died on the cross because he loves me. “Jesus Loves Me” was the first bible school song I ever learned. Throughout my whole life, I was blessed enough to grow up in a church that constantly reassured me how much Christ loves me. He loves me enough to die on the cross and bear the weight of all the sins I’ve ever committed, and ever will. When I meet someone who doesn’t share my faith, they almost always say it’s because Christians are too “judgmental”. It has always puzzled me because I’ve never felt judged for my actions by my church family. However, my freshman year of college, I had my first experience with a “Christian Extremist” and I now know why so many people are turning away from God.

You say, “You are all going to hell on judgement day”

The Bible says, “Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God” – Romans 14:10

Man has NO right to place judgement on another man. Only God has that authority. So, you, sir, cannot tell me that I am going to hell on judgement day.

You say, “Women are the cause of all rape cases. God does not expect men to be able to control themselves around such whore-ish women”

The Bible says, “Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled” – Titus 2:6

Urge the young men to be self-controlled. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

You say, “Men are superior to women.”

The Bible says, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” – Genesis 1:27

Man and women are created in his own image. Women were made from the rib bone of a man because God knew man needed a companion. We are created as equals, in His image.

You go on tangents bringing up things that Bible has no word on. For instance, “women who wear pants are whores.” I’m sorry, WHAT? That may be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Or even, “all men in fraternities are rapist.” That’s just ridiculous. You shout these things at college students and tell us all the ways we sin and that God hates us for it. God hates sin, and loves the sinner. Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners by choice. Near the end of your anger-inducing speech, you even said, “I am morally perfect. Today I have not sinned.” A student, readily equipped with a Bible, read you 1 John 1:8 which says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” We are all sinners, no man except Jesus Christ himself was without sin. But that’s the beauty of humanity. We are flawed, but the Lord loves us anyways.

“For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more” – Hebrews 8:12

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
