Happy New Year! A new year means new games and experiences. New great ideas and gems to be discovered. My 2016 started off with this wonderful indie game that actually came out two years ago. It is called One Way Heroics and its a rogue-like RPG and I've had the greatest time playing it.
Where does One Way Heroics get its name? The way gameplay functions is that in the over world you can only walk in one direction. You can walk from left to right and never backwards, otherwise you walk into the darkness and it kills you. The story is that the world is being consumed by the darkness created by the Demon Lord whom you, as a hero, must defeat in order to drive away the darkness and save the world. As a hero, you have the ability to travel through dimensions in order to reach this goal. This is also where the rogue-like elements come into play.
Each play through and map are randomly generated so that every experience is entirely different from the previous one. When the hero dies on their adventure, you can store items and equipment in the dimensional vault for the next play through vastly making each run easier. Death is encouraged and not really a punishment as each death is a learning experience. It very much reminds me of the Souls series games where it's challenging and brutal, but each failure brings a glimmer of hope to take away from it.
There is also the class and perks system in One Way Heroics and there are a multitude of classes to choose from in the game like the pirate, knight, or sword master and the updated version, brings many more classes, party members, and enemies to boot.
There's a lot of content to go through. There's multiple endings based on what party members you have when you defeat the Demon Lord. There's also another ending where instead of fighting the Demon Lord, you face the true monster that lies within the darkness that consumes the world as you journey throughout. You can access special dimension play throughs that offer different challenges like random Demon Lord encounters, finding different party members or playing under challenging conditions. It goes a long way in making sure every time you play, it feels like a new game and it has me sold.
I sincerely recommend getting this game. The price tag is less than $5 on Steam and is well worth the investment.
